WATER TESTING KITS FOR FIELD USE

WATER TESTING KITS FOR FIELD USE

Water is tested in laboratories to find out the minerals present in it along with parameters like pH, conductivity, colour and turbidity. The tests help establish the presence of any parameter and the extent to which it is present in a particular water. Most of the tests are done using the time tested method of titration, using laboratory glassware like burettes, pipettes, conical flasks and beakers. This method still prevails although modern instruments like spectrophotometers, chromatographs, etc have started making their presence felt for testing parameters where the titration method cannot be used.

Since it is not possible to carry delicate glassware out into the field for field tests, several companies/agencies/NGOs/Government laboratories have done a lot of work to bring out kits which use the titration principles but are light, can stand up to rough 'travel' and still give fairly accurate results. These are field test kits which can be used anywhere and by anyone who can read the instructions. Titration involves using a chemical solution of a known strength in a burette to be added to a sample of water to be tested in a beaker/conical flask. A chemical indicator solution is also added to the water before titration. The solution from the burette is added to the sample in carefully controlled drops with the sample being continuously stirred. This addition is stopped when the colour of the sample changes. The burette reading taken after colour change is multiplied by a specific numerical factor. This gives the quantity of the parameter tested for in the water in terms of mg/litre or parts per million (pm). All titration tests are colorimetric tests where a change in colour is an indication that the presence/absence of the parameter being tested had been ascertained.

Most of the field test kits operate on the same principle. The kit consists of a sample bottle with a marking on it to indicate that the sample to be tested must be filled up to that mark. Another bottle contains the required chemical solution (which in a lab would be in the burette). This bottle would have a dropper fitted on it. Depending on the parameter to be tested, there would be a small dropper bottle containing the indicator solution (tests for certain parameters may not need such an indicator). To use this kind of a kit, the sample bottle is first rinsed with the water to be tested and then filled up to the mark. The solution from the dropper bottle is added to this sample after adding the recommended drops of indicator solution, a drop at a time, counting each drop. When the colour of the sample changes, the addition of the solution is stopped, number of drops added is multiplied by a factor given in the instruction manual to arrive at the quantity of the parameter in mg/litre of water or ppm.

Test kits used for testing the bacteriological content in water are slightly different. Some have a bottle in which the sample of water to be tested is put and into which another solution is added. It is then shut and kept for a period of several hours or overnight. If, at the end of this period, the sample has acquired a colour as given in the instructions, it indicates that the sample is bacteriologically contaminated, otherwise not. Another kit used for such tests is called a 'dip slide'. It consists of a slide made of an inert plastic material coated with a nutrient which is kept inside a sealed container. This slide is taken out of the container by breaking the seal of the container, dipped into the sample of water to be tested and then kept aside for several hours or overnight. If, at the end of this period, the slide has acquired or changed colour it is an indication that the sample is contaminated. Tests for bacteriological contamination using such kits only indicate the presence or absence of contamination (also called a GO/NO GO result) and not its extent.

It is important to remember that all such kits have a shelf life. Once this has expired, the kits must not be used as results will be wrong or inconsistent. Given below is a table of the kits available in the market indicating the parameter, name and manufacturer/supplier from whom they can be procured. The accuracy of the results may not be as accurate as those done in a laboratory. It may be in the range of +/- 5. In the table below, where a multiparameter kit is indicated but not the parameters, it is usually for the parameters which determine the potability of water.

Why RO water purifier in the kitchen( Domestic 10 LPH Reverse Osmosis ) ???

There are advantages and disadvantages in every technology.

CASE STUDY: NEW DELHI.
The area where I stay in New Delhi,India, the ground water is contaminated because of Dirty Yamuna River flowing nearby. And there is no piped water from Govt. The only option for drinking is Domestic RO (10 LPH) at home or the 20 liter JAR supplied by PRIVATE water companies. And for all other purposes ,people are installing water softener in the bore well water..If they dont use water softener, then the domestic RO membrane gets damaged and is to be changed twice a year.

RO is the only technology which can remove Bacteria, Iron, fluoride, Arsenic and other chemical contaminants. Arsenic and other heavy metals in well water is one of the most dangerous aspects of drinking well water. So you should have a fail safe water purifier system for Arsenic by installing a Point of Use - RO water purifier in the kitchen where water for drinking and cooking is taken.Reverse Osmosis is though expensive, is available as domestic filter. Once the membrane is clogged, it cant filter water anymore, so you always get pure water. This is not so with any other technology.

What is the desirable quality of drinking water?
As per the Bureau of Indian Standards, the desirable quality of drinking water is that which has TDS (Total Dissolved Salts) content of 500 ppm or less (ppm stands for parts of the salt present in a million parts of water). Where water of this quality is not easily available, the compromise level is water having upto 2000 ppm.
It is to be borne in mind that in some places, iron salts may be present and if the content of iron salts is more than the permissible 0.4ppm, even if the total salt content is less than the desired level, the iron salts will have to be removed before drinking that water. There are also some pockets West Bengal and U.P. where the water contains Arsenic. This is poisonous and so here also the same rule applies. In some pockets again, fluoride salts may be present which affect the bones if that water is drunk. Using this water for non-potable purposes is however not harmful.
Another point to be remembered is that water with very low salt content is not very palatable and therefore where the total salt content is less than 500, reducing it to 10 or 20 by RO is not only meaningless from the point of view of wastage of water but also from the cost and loss of palatability aspects. In cases where the salt content is not much higher than 2000 ppm, a simpler route would be to harvest rainwater which will dilute the salts and bring it within potable limits progressively.

What is the Reverse Osmosis (RO) Process?

Reverse Osmosis (RO) technology has been used for years in various industries to separate dissolved solids from water by forcing the water through a semi-permeable membrane. RO is also commonly used to purify drinking water and desalinate seawater to yield potable water. The water and other molecules with lower molecular weight (specific weight of molecules allowed to pass through is dependent on the selected membrane) pass through the micropores in the membrane, yielding a purified water stream called the permeate. Larger molecules are retained by the membrane as well as a portion of the water that does not pass through the membrane. This concentrated stream is called the concentrate or RO reject.

REVERSE OSMOSIS PERCENT REJECTION CALCULATOR    http://www.apswater.com/calcs.asp

While RO is an effective method for handling wastewater, what to do with the concentrate or reject water (typically as much as 20-40% of the RO feed water volume) can be an issue. Specifically, the high salinity in RO reject / RO concentrate can make it prohibitive for discharge to a local sewer facility. Hauling the wastewater to a treatment facility can also be prohibitively expensive.

What can we do with the RO reject water?
In RO systems of small capacity suitable for domestic purposes, the rejected component may be as high as 40%. The process therefore is a wasteful one with much of the water having to be thrown away.
Diverting large volumes of this highly salty water into the sewage line could result in acting against the smooth movement of its contents. The reject will not be tolerated by normal garden plants. It will form deposits on the floor and sanitary ware. It is also not advisable to divert it to the septic tank.
If the water subjected to RO has less than 1000 ppm say, then the salt content in the reject water will not be much and it can be used for gardening or flushing. But the point is that this water need not be subjected to RO at all in the first place.
In Industries, we treat RO Reject by Solar evaporation or Forced evaporation.
evaporation is a time-tested methodology for reducing the water portion of water-based waste.
Typical RO reject / RO concentrate TDS concentrations are often in the range of 30,000 – 50,000 mg/liter. The salts in solution can range from highly soluble sodium and potassium salts to less soluble or reverse soluble calcium and barium salts.

How ENVO was born

ENVO IS MY BRAND & WAS BORN ON 1994. THE FOLLOWING IS THE STORY OF ENVO.

My career began with my respected Uncle  Prof Dr. A.F.S.A.Aowal, I learned the ABCD of  waste water treatment from him. I was working under him as part time lecturer at Delhi college of engineering, Kashmere Gate,Delhi .

Also, I was working as design engineer in National Associates, Delhi. I was staying in 27,Hayat manzil, Basti hazrat nizamuddin, delhi at that time.

ONE FINE MORNING IN 1994, I FOUND MYSELF ALL ALONE. EVERYONE WORKING WITH ME AT NATIONAL ASSOCIATE DESERTED ME WHOLESALE.

That first kick stunned me for three days and I sat at banglawali masjid (Headquarter of Tabligh Jamaat) at basti Hzt nizamuddin for three days to find out my own roots. A few like my Father  Syed Ishtiaque Ahmad saheb,  Prof Dr. Rashid Hayat Siddiqui saheb of AMU, Dr Chandra Prakash Ji , Vipan Kundra Ji etc gave me "MORAL" support. And M/s Syed Envo Protect (India) Pvt Limited, New Delhi was finally born in 1994....the ENVO brand was born in 1994. Mr.Vipan Kundra, my CA was one of the share holders. It is Vipan kundra ji who gave and registered the name Syed Envo Protect (India) Pvt Limited even without consulting me,because I  was in Assam at that time. He told me that one day I will become international ,thats why he added india to the name.

Later I opened one another company by the name of Envo Projects, New Delhi which is still continuing by the grace of God when the private limited company was dissolved due to various reasons.

I received my first career break of my company Syed ENVO PROTECT (I) PVT LTD , a  consultancy at rupees five thousand only at M/s Shade and colors in okhla industrial area phase –I of owner Mr.Deepu Marwah. It’s a cloth dyeing factory.

I left my part time lectureship job in Delhi college of engineering, kashmere gate, delhi  just to concentrate on my own company ENVO. Each and  Everyone called me "lunatic" at that time as nobody was doing full time consultancy in water and waste water treatment in 1994, almost everyone had a govt job. Only gupta ji of Ghaziabad and a few are in the market as full timers. So i jumped  at a completely unknown thing with full confidence in GOD AND MYSELF.At that point of time nobody imagined that this pollution control sector will grow such like this. I created a tag line for my company “THE POLLUTION CONTROL PEOPLE” which i still use in my letterhead.

Many companies are created later on with my credentials and full support by the grace of God. Now i have taken it for granted. I mean, its natural to have a new team after each two three years. So i never try to stop people, anyway they will go , so let them go and try their own luck, good for them, good for me also..But this time as a safety device  i have retained my own company "Envo Projects" under my sole control (Owner) so that i can fall back. People always learn from mistakes. Life is the best teacher.

AND NOW TODAY(09/10/2011), FROM MY HEART I  THANK ALL MY CO WORKERS WHO ARE WITH ME NOW AND WHO LEFT, WITHOUT THEIR BLOOD AND SWEAT ENVO PROJECTS WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN WHAT IT IS TODAY.BECAUSE ITS MY LEARNING CURVE TOO. I ALSO MADE MANY MISTAKES DURING THE GROWTH AND LEARNED FROM IT.

Change your attitude towards life. Do not look for perfection and CONTROL in everything in life. I understood that my livelihood (RIZQ)  cant be  taken away by  anyone.  Put your  best  efforts in what you do and than leave the result to ALLAH. I have plan but Allahs plan is much much better than mine. I have firm belief in ALLAH.

During this journey many people came and left me. I thank all of them for their contribution for my growth. They are destined to be with me for that particular period. This is Allah’s plan.

Always sleep with a clean heart. I know many of us get wronged throughout the day or have gotten wronged in the past. Forgive. Not only forgive, but forgive and forget. Dont even hold a grudge against that person in your heart. Keep your heart completely pure.Forgive brothers and sisters before you sleep each night. this is one of the practices of the greatest people ever to live and this is how we will reach those highest levels of spirituality.

Forgiveness is good for your own well being, its about giving yourself permission to let go of the painful past. Forgiveness is not something we do for that particular toxic person,it is something we do for ourselves so we can move on to a better future. We forgive, not because that toxic person deserves it,but because we deserve peace, for a pure heart.

why i am working for environmental issues ENVO-Environmental Organization

ITS NOT POSSIBLE TO FOLLOW ALL THE THINGS THAT OUR PROPHET (Peace be upon him PBUH) HAD DONE, HE IS MODEL FOR ALL PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD.

When I was 10-12 yrs old, i heard Maulana Madani (Senior) say that if somebody follows just one sunnah steadfastly throughout his life thats sufficient for him.Growing beard is also sunnah(Origin of my beard)...pray for me...pray for me that i die with kalma (the minimum requirement).... And pray for me that I can do something for the betterment of this world before I die.... Otherwise there is no meaning of my existence in this world.doctors are making peoples health better...engineers are making living conditions better.... Alims are making spiritual lives better.

NOW HAVE I DONE SOMETHING OR STILL DONT HAVE ANY GOAL IN LIFE.no, I have found in Quran majeed myself that the world is a gift from Allah and nobody has the right to destroy it… .So we don't have any right in making our rivers into drain (read yamuna river, bhorolu river), polluting our air with our car exhaust, littering the greens with solid waste…. I am trying my best in this regard …after forming ENVO.

The philosophy behind my work in environmental engineering

PREAMBLE OF ENVO

Nature is a gift to us . No individual or organisation has the right dto utilise its resources in such a way that damage or inconvenience is caused  to  people of society . we all have a social responsibility to protect and preserve a clean and green environment. The goale of profit maximisation and customer satisfaction should be surbordinate to the social need and responsibilities. The present concern has been brought about by the health of humans, living being, tree , structures, monuments and all other things. It was repeatedly mentioned in the Qur'an: Forbidding from spoiling the earth after Allah (Exalted and Almighty) has created it suitable and well prepared for the successive human generations. It announced that Allah does not like spoiling or those who spoil in life, this includes spoiling environment, polluting it or being aggressive with it. Also it is forbidden to abuse it in any way that would make it deviate from the purpose of Allah created it for. This would be like showing ingratitude to Allah, that would cause vengeance from Allah, and becomes like a warning to those who perpetrated this, that severe penalty will almost come upon them as what happened before to the `Aad and the Thamud and those who came after them.
"Who did transgress beyond bounds in the land (in the disobedience of Allah) and made therein much mischief. So your Lord poured on them different kinds of severe torment. Surely your Lord is Ever-Watchful." (89:11-14) Islam urges its followers to have great concern for everything created by Allah, for it is part and parcel of "submission to Allah" to show reverence to all what the Almighty Allah created.

We cant be all rounder like our Prophet (PBUH),but atleast we can excel in one field and serve humnanity as he did.
May Allah accepts my hard work and bestow his blessings on me and forgive me for the major and minor SINS I make in every steps
...ALLAH HAFIZ....
