help our sharp minds keep their edge

Original Message ----- From: JEBEEN@aol.com To: JEBEEN@aol.com Sent: Sunday, January 16, 2005 11:50 AM Subject: 1/16/05 Get smart!

get smart

Science has found new strategies to help our sharp minds keep their edge.

In a world with smart cars, smart toys, smart telephones, and even smart toilets, it was only a matter of time before scientists figured out how to make smarter people. A convergence of technologies that allow doctors to watch the brain in action and an aging population challenged by everyday remembering and calculating have spurred a tremendous amount of research into what makes the brain tick—and how to make it tick better.

"We used to think that the adult brain couldn’t grow," says neurologist Jay Lombard, coauthor of Balance Your Brain, Balance Your Life (Wiley & Sons, $25). "Now we know that it not only grows but also regenerates old cells that are out of use." You can encourage this growth and regeneration, research has shown, by taking steps to strengthen and challenge your brain. Most of the following recommendations involve nothing more than focusing your attention. The rest aim to reverse the ravages of an unhealthy lifestyle.

Age is undeniably a factor. Boomers tend to notice more weaknesses in their memory and concentration than 20-year-olds do. But people of any age can benefit from these smartening-up strategies. The brain is like a muscle: It can always use a little exercise.

play games often

Classic games like chess, checkers, bridge, and backgammon are perfect brain food. They force you to think ahead, to see the big picture, and to consider a number of options at once. The Albert Einstein College of Medicine, in the Bronx, New York, published the evidence this past summer from a study that followed a group of nearly 500 elderly people for 21 years. Researchers found that those who played games at least once a week cut their risk of developing dementia by at least half. The benefit increased with the number of times they played—up to four times a week. "Clearly you must have a level of competence, and it’s got to be something you enjoy," says Joe Verghese, M.D., clinical director of the study.

Younger chess players are better able than older ones to consider a large number of potential moves. But scientists have shown that memory pathways return with practice. Lots of games count as brain toners, including solitaire, Stratego, and Scrabble. So turn off the TV and start playing. If nothing else, you’ll feel like a kid again.

shift gears

We live in a left-brain world, where logic and the ability to think things through before acting are rewarded. By always looking before we leap, however, we squeeze out valuable input from the creative and intuitive right side of the brain. The solution is to choose a leisure-time activity that penalizes you for thinking or talking before acting. "We have to change the patterns of our thoughts from time to time," says Lombard.

Pinball, juggling, and Nintendo, believe it or not, are all excellent right-brain activities, because they force you to act on instinct. Doodling is a classic way to tease out abstract right-brain thoughts, as are looking at (not talking about) art and listening to music. Richard Restak, M.D., a clinical professor of neurology at George Washington University, in Washington, D.C., even encourages people to play a game with wads of paper and a trash can: Begin by standing about six feet away with your back to the can. Quickly turn and throw the paper into the can without thinking. Once the left-brain inner coach takes over and starts critiquing your tosses, the workout is over. Take time out for these kinds of mind-shifting activities whenever you need a break or are feeling overloaded during the day.

build your memory

Thanks to stress, poor nutrition, and sleep deprivation, the average person begins noticing a decline in memory around age 40. It’s crucial to fix the lifestyle problems, but it’s also possible to revive memory power through training. Many experts recommend systems such as chunking — for instance, learning your credit-card number in chunks of three digits. Most memory courses also teach mnemonic techniques for remembering names, like picturing an Easter hat with lilies on the head of a woman you’ve just met who’s named Lily.

But there are less contrived ways of increasing your attention to detail. Restak recommends incorporating a little study time into leisure activities. If you’re reading a mystery, jot down the sequence of events you’ve just read as soon as you put the book down. Or when you’ve finished watching a DVD, try to recall all the scenes in order. You might even scroll back to see how well you did.

The key to the strength of any memory is emotional content. Everyone remembers where they were on September 11, 2001, but how about November 14? Some things may be just too boring to hold on to — ergo, Post-it notes, which come in many shapes, sizes, and colors. They can prompt you on the nitty-gritty stuff, freeing your mind to work on storing the worthy memories.

be active

No more jokes about dumb jocks: It is now irrefutable that exercise increases brainpower. "The greater your level of fitness, the less brain tissue you will lose as you age," says Stan Colcombe, Ph.D., a neuroscientist at the Beckman Institute for Advanced Studies, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Aerobic exercise pumps more blood to the brain, bringing vitalizing oxygen and nutrients to cells. But even more powerful is the effect of exercise on an intracellular messenger called brain drive neurotropin factor (BDNF). Exercise increases BDNF, which has been shown to slow the rate of normal brain-cell death and increase the production of brain cells. "The absentminded professor just needs to get up from his desk," says Colcombe. His minimum prescription: a brisk 15-minute walk (enough to elevate your heart rate) three times a week — for the rest of your life.

reduce stress

Even when life is OK — job is great, family healthy and happy — information overload continually places extraordinary stress on the brain. "You get up and have coffee, watch CNN, read the New York Times, and rush off to work. It’s a disaster for your brain," says Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D., a meditation authority and coauthor of Brain Longevity (Warner Books, $15). Stress produces a hormone called cortisol. Cortisol starves brain cells of fuel, particularly in the hippocampus, where memories are stored and retrieved. And scientists know that chronic cortisol elevation kills brain cells. To put it simply, stress shrinks your brain.

Luckily, the cure for the stressed mind is simple: downtime. Meditation is the mother of all downtime activities. To some, however, the concept is intimidating, because it implies learning a new skill — not to mention making time for it.

In her book The Art of Doing Nothing (Clarkson Potter, $17), Véronique Vienne extols the virtues of merely lounging on your back with your eyes half-shut. And, she claims, reorganizing a sock drawer is almost as good as meditation, but only if you give yourself permission to abandon the activity midway. (If you have to force yourself to continue, your mind will no longer be at rest.) Keep in mind that Leonardo da Vinci was notorious for leaving projects unfinished. And if you’re feeling guilty about doing nothing, tell yourself you’re busy reducing cortisol levels in your hippocampus.

feed your brain

We’ve all heard it before, but it’s been confirmed yet again by recent research: Fish is the best brain food. Not just any fish, but cold-water species like salmon, tuna, and mackerel, which contain omega-3 fatty acids in abundance. These molecules reduce inflammation and protect brain cells from free-radical damage. Jay Lombard eats cold-water fish three times a week; he says that only people who don’t eat fish should bother taking fish-oil capsules. He does, however, strongly recommend a daily supplement containing folic acid, which is needed for forming myelin, the nerve sheath that makes it possible for neurotransmitters in the brain to send messages.

Lowering cholesterol may also help protect the brain, by reducing the risk of Alzheimer’s disease, according to Gunnar Gouras, M.D., an assistant professor of neurology and neuroscience at Cornell University’s Weill Medical College, in New York City. Dining on antioxidant-rich blueberries increases a brain chemical necessary for memory, though you’d need to eat them by the bowlful. "I tell people just to eat a multitude of colorful fruits and vegetables for good measure," says Lombard. "That’s what nature intended." Mother Nature also gave us coffee and chocolate to enhance mental performance, but as stimulants they should be used sparingly. There’s the risk of overdoing it, which may cause stress and counteract the subtle benefits of imbibing.

dodge depression

It’s hard to think straight when you’re depressed. In fact, a marked deterioration of short-term memory — for example, not being able to recall what you had for breakfast — is one of the most common symptoms of depression. "You lose your ability to focus and concentrate, and that influences your ability to store new memories," says Paul Solomon, Ph.D., a professor of psychology at Williams College, in Williamstown, Massachusetts. People often go to the doctor afraid that they’re developing Alzheimer’s disease only to find out they are depressed, which is more readily treatable, Solomon says. The good news is, symptoms like lack of focus, short attention span, inability to concentrate, and poor short-term memory typically resolve themselves as the depression lifts.

Antidepressant drugs are not the only answer. Psychological therapy is also effective. And research by the Bronfenbrenner Life Course Center, at Cornell University, showed that volunteering boosts self-esteem and energy. So donating a little time to others is good for you, not to mention what it does for your karma.

VILLAGE DEVELOPEMENT

Dear Colleagues,

Apologies for entering into the lively discussion a bit late.

Our once healthy and pleasant villages have suffered degeneration as a result of people in the burgeoning towns and cities pursuing unsustainable consumeristic way of living. Cities draw on the resources of the village and rural areas for growing their materialistic propserity and dispose of their unhealthy products and waste in the villages creating serious problems for villages always short of money resources. Since the time poor and developing countries have accepted `free market access and globalisation' dictats of the rich and overpowering world, foreign corporations and loval large business have illfiltrated their unsustainable and wasteful products packed in plastics and aluminium foil in villages causing irreparable damage. Villages are their dumping grounds for disposing of their junk products.

This has created serious problemds in the hinterland. To protect the erstwhile healthy,
self correcting and protecting life style that protected the environment and conserved
natural resources, we shall have to go f and or revive many things that our villages and villagefolks have discarded or are discarding to copy self destructive practices.

Villages should utilise their local resoucres for construction and maintenance of their shelters. Instead of cement, steel and similar factory made products, shelters should
be built using local materials like wood, bamboo, vegetative material, earth etc.

Every household should have toilet and washing places with biogas and vermiculture facilties that provide energy and compost. Organic component of kitchen and
domestic waste should be turned into compost while recyclable component should
be recycled and reused.

Non-conventional energy sources like solar, wind power should be applied for cooking, lighting and other purposes. Villages should be independent of the commercial power
plants as no poor country run by urban politicians would ever divert finite resource
based power to villages. Villages should be self dependent if they want to be free of
frequent and constant power shedding.

Suistainable agriculture not requiring use of synthetic fertilisers and pesticides, hybrid
and GM seeds and heavy agriculture implements should be applied to reduce the
food cost as well as to improve the environment and general health. Cooperatives not
of the size of Amul but to ensure minimum food and other natural resources within the region should be developed.

Water harvesting and water shed management programmes should be developed to conserve water for the region.

Villages should be helped to produce healthy food and food items for people not having access to land to improve public health in cities. Cities should stop dumping hteir waste
into villages as well as in the water bodies and in the sea. Urbanites have a duty to
manage their waste in a way that the soil can use for enhancing its fertility. The
estimatesd 100,000 ton of solid waste generated in our country daily should be turned
into soil conditioner by the larger areas and returned to the soil in villages for imrpoving
the quality of food and conserving our natural resources.

Many innvations need to need to be introduced and applied with a commitment to
make rural areas self sufficient in natural resources. They should be protected
against the consumerist onslaught. The prevailing life style and business practices
have made villagers depend on the industrialised prodcts. This dependence has to
go. Villages should instead feed cities with healthy food.

The fundamental truth that the health of a country and its people is direcly linked
the extent of the health of its villages should not be lost sight of. This is an universal
truth for the entire globe.

The question is how many of us are ready and ancious to work for bringing about
the change? Best wishes

Subject: [indianenvironment] things needed urgently

Dear Dr Zuberi, University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh

I am working for the last Ten years in Delhi in the field of environmental pollution control, specifically water and waste water treatment. But i belong to a remote village in Assam near nagaland border.
Points to be noted regarding the five points raised,
1. There is a big difference amongst villages in UP,Bihar , Maharastra and Assam. assamese villages have proper layouts, clean and wide roads with big pot holes (which can be used for fisheries;-)),etc etc. seeing is believing.
2.assamese villages are using composting method of night soil disposal. so no sewerage is required.zero maintenance.
2.regarding ponds, they are infact developing the old ponds into fisheries and poultry farming.
3.they are already doing Protection and returning of captured pasture land or land of village society for various progressive programmes by plantation of small tea gardens, small Patchouli plantations, teak wood, eucaliptus, the list is long... they are doing it themselves without any help from NGOs or Govt.
4.point 4 that is Money generating environmental projects to employ and satisfy the simple living status of young villagers who come between the age groups of 18 to 25 years. ---- covered in point 3.
5.point 5 that is To open counseling and employment centers in all blocks of county with simple but holistic fruitful mission-----what exactly this means....?

WHAT I HAVE SEEN and think needed urgently:
1. the villages need co-operatives to sell their produce like AMUL in Gujrat.
2.low cost iron removal techniques for drinking water
3.low cost flouride removal techniques for drinking water
4.low cost arsenic removal techniques for drinking water( BANGLADESH & WEST BENGAL)

Subject: Please think for villages

Dear friends,

I am happy that the question of our villages come up. Without this there will be no development.

I work in Bangladesh villages, very similar to Indian villages. The issues have been identified alright but the question of redesigning or even doing something will involve the people of the villages who are owner of the unplanned houses etc. One only can do something taking them into consideration, in fact they will have to do it.

During our attempts, we noticed and faced very complex situations - conflicts of interest, social differences and huge needs - all making intervention very difficult if not impossible.

Have any one given a thought on this ? How this can be overcome ?

RIDDLES

Riddles

1. A murderer is condemned to death. He has to choose between three
rooms. The first is full of raging fires, the second is full of
assassins with loaded guns, and the third is full of lions that haven't
eaten in 3 years. Which room is safest for him?

2. A woman shoots her husband. Then she holds him under water for over 5
minutes. Finally, she hangs him. But 5 minutes later they both go out
together and enjoy a wonderful dinner together. How can this be?

3. What is black when you buy it, red when you use it, and gray when you
throw it away?

4. Can you name three consecutive days without using the words Monday,
Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday?

5. This is an unusual paragraph. I'm curious how quickly you can find
out what is so unusual about it. It looks so plain you would think
nothing was wrong with it. In fact, nothing is wrong with it! It is
unusual though. Study it, and think about it, but you still may not find
anything odd. But if you work at it a bit, you might find out. Try to do
so without any coaching.

ANSWERS:

1. The third. Lions that haven't eaten in three years are dead

2. The woman was a photographer. She shot a picture of her husband,
developed it and hung it up to dry.

3. Charcoal

4. Sure you can: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow!

5. The letter "e", which is the most common letter in the English
language, does not appear once in the long paragraph.

TIME MANAGEMENT

Quality of focus on your roles

In life it is not very important what you are. What is more important is what you want to become in your various roles in life. A role is the responsibility that you have on a specific portfolio of life. For example you may be a lawyer, an engineer or a doctor. These designations defines what are you at present. You need to focus on where you are going to be in this role. We can call it as a goal or objective.

While dealing with goals or objectives, it is very important to be clear on how keen on you in playing your role. Unless you are keen and committed in a role, you cannot accomplish something significant in that role. You should have a benchmark in the form of a role model. Your role model can be any one whom you consider to be the best in that field.

For this you need to concentrate on that role by allocating enough time not only to hold on to that role but also to make a significant contribution in that role. You take the life of any one who has accomplished something great. Take the examples of Mahatma Gandhi, Mother Teresa, Abraham Lincoln, John F Kennedy etc. They achieved because they made meaningful contribution for their role by dedicating all their time with a single-minded focus.

Thomas Edison accomplished much more than an average person. His achievement to the modern society is impossible to measure. The reason for such great achievement is not fate, luck, opportunity etc. It is the concentration that they brought in to their work on hand. Thomas Edison worked long hours. He had the ability to work long hours, concentrate and focus on the work on the particular project on hand body and soul. He will not take the next project unless the present project is completed fully.

The ability to focus all your attention and focus on the project on hand is a key factor for success. Thomas Edison had this concentration and he developed a tunnel vision and allowed no distraction. His persistence was legendary. It is said that he performed over ten thousand experiments before he produced the first incandescent light.

What about you? Do you concentrate all your attention on your roles and focus your full concentration on the task on hand?

============================

Structuring the available time to optimum use.

In order to make full use of our time, we should plan effectively for maximum results. This depends on the quality of our plan. Before starting to plan your time, you should be clear on the following:

a.. What is my long-term goal? What is that I want to be in 8 to 10 years' time?

b.. What is my medium term goal? Out of the next 10-year goal, what I am going to accomplish within the next 4 to 5 years?

c.. What I should accomplish within the next 6 months' time so that I am nearer to my five-year plan?

d.. What should be my focus for the next week? How many hours I should sleep, how many hours I should read, how many hours I should exercise, how many hours I should socialise, etc. in this week? Am I realistic with reference to my time investment?

Once you are clear on the above, then there are many tools. If you go to any stationary shop you can see the following:

a.. Diaries: there are day at sight, week at sight, month at sight, yearly planners etc. Do not just buy a diary. Check if the structure of the diary fits your profile and responsibility. It is like choosing a shoe or any footwear. If not chosen properly, it may pinch you!

b.. Weekly planners: you will find tabletop weekly planners showing time slots and schedules.

c.. Daily sheet planners: you will find to do lists and daily organising materials. Even a notebook will serve this purpose.

d.. Timers: there are timers available in most of the sports shops. You can set the timer for a pre determined duration after which the alarm will go off reminding you that the time that you planned for the activity on hand is over.

e.. Electronic diaries and computers: these are very useful to help you to manage your time. If you carefully analyse the various features, you will be amazed how much more you can structure your time.

I repeat what I have been saying: there is no such thing as no time. All of us have the same amount of time. We differ in the way we use our available time.

'No time please.....'

One of the oft-repeated phrases in our life is 'no time'. We say that I have no time for reading books, no time for doing physical exercises, no time to meet relatives and friends, no time for greeting friends and relatives on birth days etc. If you think for a while, you will realise that it is not as though that we did not have time. The real fact is that we did not allot time for that activity or task. Instead of saying I did not allot time for this activity , we conveniently say 'I did not have time'. Really speaking, it is an escape route and an excuse. I do not want to admit our lack of will power and lack of control on our time.

When we say "I did not have time', others also accept this, since they also say the same very often! It is very easy to say this than finding out the real reason for out lack of commitment and will power. You have to realise the consequences of saying that you do not have a resource that you should be having. Can you say I do not have money to buy a thing that you need most? Can you say I do not have the presence of mind at a time when the opposite vehicle is about to hit your vehicle? Can you say I do not have the knowledge of electricity and put your fingers into an electric socket? If you say all this, and even assuming you it is true, what will be the consequence?

In fact, you will appreciate the fact that the only resource, which you always have, is time. Irrespective of our status in life, all of us have equal amount of this resource. The only difference between those who accomplish and those who do not is the way they plan for this resource. Those who reach heights of excellence in life know what and when they should do a particular thing in life.

This is what is called 'setting priorities'.

Next time you about to say that 'I do not have time', check yourself and say ' I did not find time for doing this'. It is difficult to do this. But, it will bring in a lot of self-discipline in you.

Then, why do we feel that we do not have time?

Communicate your love and affection!

Time is an important component for life and life without emotion and love is meaningless. The purpose of time management is to live a life of mutual co existence. Our time should add happiness and joy to those around us. We have to create a meaningful, supportive and respectful relationship among the people with whom we co exist. The issue is not whether we live or not, but how we live and how much we influence the life of others.

Our available time should not be used only to pursue our goals and aspirations in life. It should also be used to create a pleasant world in which people live a happy life. Our available time should be spent on three areas, viz., planning, doing and interacting. Planning is the way we plan our various activities. Doing is carrying out the planned activities. These two aspects of time management will be taken care of since the system will ensure that they are attended to. But, the interacting aspect of living will gets ignored in our pursuit to our goals.

We need to improve the quality of our interaction with others. We need to show that we love and care for others so that they have a chance to reciprocate our sentiments. Love and affection should be exhibited through external behaviour so that people understand our emotions. Try doing the following activities:

a.. Try sending wedding day and birthday cards and not the ritualistic New Year cards.

b.. Telephone a friend or relative just to say hello without any other agenda.

c.. Attend the various functions, small or big and talk to people.

d.. Share a joke or anecdote with your family members.

e.. Visit a friend or relative who is ailing or going through some testing time.

You may add to this list based on your experience. If you have any thing to share with others, please e-mail and I will circulate the same to all!

========================================

Maintain your improvement

Any improvement has to be continuous and consistent. An improvement has to be sustained. If we do not sustain and maintain an improvement, it means we are sliding. Our progress and achievement have to be measurable. Our goals have to be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time bound. These five parameters can be best remembered by the acronym 'SMART'.

We should not only measure the outcome, but also the improvement of outcome. Even more important is the improvement over the improvement we have made! This situation is even more relevant in the era of change and economic reforms.

We can take an example. Let us take the example of market growth of a specific product. Our available time has to be spent on three areas: maintaining the current level of productivity to meet the existing demand by the market, to improve the present market share to beat the competition and to sustain the improvement so that we become even more effective. The aim should be small, continuous and sustained improvement.

For this we need to focus on latest technology and skill and improving our own skill or expertise level. If this is not done, we will be left behind. Our available time should be distributed on these areas also.

Learn from mistakes, change!

We have to use intelligence to work for us. We should be sharp enough to learn from our experience. If we do not introspect and learn from our mistakes, we cannot improve. I cam across the following poem which you may also like.

"Allegory of Change"
Day 1

I walk down the street

There is a deep hoe in the sidewalk.

I fall in

I am lost..I am helpless

It isn't my fault.

It takes forever to find a way out.

Day 2

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I pretend I don't see it.

I fall again.

I can't believe I am in the same place, but,

It isn't my fault.

It still takes a long time to get out.

Day 3

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I see it is there.

I still fall in.it's a habit!

My eyes are open.

I know where I am

It is my fault.

I get out immediately.

Day 4

I walk down the same street.

There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.

I walk around it.

Day 5

I walk down another street!

Have a mentor!

There are times when we are confused on some issue and feel the need for some one to guidance. There may be occasions when we would like to share our thoughts with some one we trust to check if we are on the right track. We also need some one to check and correct when we may be doing something wrong.

We need such mentors. We have to seek and find one who will guide us properly and who are sincerely interested in us. Having the right type of people around us to help us when we need is also a very important factor which will decide our effectiveness. There may be areas where we are not the experts. We may not know whom to consult. Our mentors will help us on such occasions.

While it is important to have a mentor to advice us, what is more important is the way we use them and seek their guidance. Once we accept them as our mentor, we have to totally trust their wisdom and have confidence on their expertise level. They should be our conscience keeper. They need not be an expert in a specific filed. They may be a generalist with a lot of common sense.

Focused Attention Selection Tool (FAST)

Time is very scarce and we have to make most of it. When time is spent, we cannot get it back. When we pursue our goal, there will be interruptions of various kinds. Our mind is capable of focusing on thing at a time, provided we know how to make use of it. With some training and determination, we will be able to train our mind to accomplish what we want. The most important thing to do is control our five senses. For this 'FAST' can help you.

From to day till the next 10 days, determine to use all your five senses only in furtherance of your goals and ambitions in life. For example, if you are a sports person and you have set a high goal for yourself, use all your five senses only for realising that goal. See as much of video clippings of your role model performing. Read as much of sports literature as possible to improve your expertise level. Hear as much of the subject of your interest as possible. Eat only that which will help you to excel in your field. Experience and feel as much of the sports activity that you have chosen.

Consider how much more you can focus and sharpen your focus. Once you do this, then your goal will transcend from your conscious mind to your subconscious mind. This will give you the necessary mental stamina to work towards your goals with undivided attention and focus.

Have a 'disaster preparedness plan'

We need to accept the fact that things may not always go on in the right direction and that there could be problems. Problems could be big or small. Some problems could be serious. We have recently witnessed the tsunami tragedy, which struck the world killing thousands of people.

Our time should be spent only for pursuing day-to-day issues but also to anticipate potential crisis and problems. Disasters may not take place always, but if they occur, the consequences could be very severe. We need to spend some portion of our time to anticipate and plan for disaster management. We need to be in a 'state of preparedness'. We cannot prevent disasters from occurring. But we can always have a contingency plan to deal with them when they occur. With this frame of mind, we may reduce the intensity of the disaster.

Simple things such as insurance against earthquake, flood and other natural calamities do not engage our attention during normal times. Perhaps we need to plan for such things devoting some portion of our time. Fire drill is a very important activity we need to carry out at least once in a year. Checking whether all the fire distinguishers are in a fit condition and whether all the fire and emergency exits are well maintained are important activities to be done with out fail.

In the absence of such a mindset, the severity of the disasters may be very intense. Let us remember the old adage: prevention is better than cure!

===============================================

Fight Your Place

When it comes to achieving, we need to understand that there will be obstacles to our efforts and our genuine actions will meet with resistance. We may not get the amount of cooperation and support that we want and the quality of support may also differ. We need to understand that this is the reality and we need to accept this as a facto of life.

So, what are we going to do? Give up our goals and desires and succumb to the resistance? Perhaps this route is the easiest and the most comfortable. But is it going to help us?

We should understand that we have to fight for our place in the society and make our intentions known to all concerned. We need to clarify to others that we mean to reach the goals that we have set for ourselves and that we look forward to their cooperation and support. This is where the quality of our rapport with others matters. We need to understand that we need to nurture a healthy inter personal relationship with others.

One of the most important criteria for doing this is our ability to communicate with others effectively. The quality of our communication will decide the quality of our rapport and inter personal relationship. One of the finer aspects of communication is 'assertiveness'. Assertiveness is our ability to convince others with out loosing our good will. Assertiveness has to be distinguished from aggressiveness. Visit a good book shop and pick up a book on assertiveness and learn more about it.

Notice Backsliding, don't feel guilty!

Have you ever made a promise to jog every day, sincerely implemented it for a few days and then discontinued? Decided to quit smoking, but returned to it after a few days? I am sure these sound familiar to you. On such occasions it is natural to feel guilty and lose self-confidence.

If you do it, don't! Accept backsliding as normal- as something that happens to almost all people who at first do some thing emotionally and then discontinue. We need to accept it as a part of human fallibility. We need to understand that habits are not formed over night and hence cannot be removed or changed over night.

Instead of feeling guilty and sad, becomes sensitive, but not emotional. To become sensitive is to notice an even through our five senses. To become emotional is to react either too positively or too negatively. Whenever you backslide, do not ignore, but take note of the same. Introspect why you gave up doing the same and record the specific reasons for the same. Find out how you can get back to doing the activity you gave up. Perhaps you committed to do some thing, which you cannot genuinely continue. Do a cause-effect analysis and find out the root cause for your inaction.

Resolve to solve the problem and don't avoid the same.

Practice fixed time appointments.
Thursday, January 27, 2005

If you think about it, time management is nothing but getting into a discipline of doing a specific activity at a specific point of time frame. It is about time frame, time zones, time schedules, timetables, etc. Most of the time management tips are mere common sense. But, just like many common sense points are not so common, many will find them difficult to follow.

The reason for this situation is you are wired and programmed in a particular style due to conditioning of your mind and behaviour. We are comfortable to do things in the way we are used for a very long time. Any change from a pre set pattern of behaviour is difficult to practice and sustain. You will appreciate that many of the so-called New Year resolutions are given up after a few weeks of practice. We will have a lot of excuses for not following them.

However, you have to fight against this problem if you want to manage your time effectively. You need to understand that you should start from something, which is small and simple to follow. Do not start with major issues like yoga, jogging, skipping, etc. you can consider the following simple things:

; Start having the morning coffee at a specific time, say 6 30 am sharp, and follow this meticulously

; Start having break fast at a specific pre fixed time.

; Start retiring to bed at a specific time.

You pick up small but simple activities such as the above. Do not attempt to change too many things at the same time. Have not more than 2 or 3 things to be changed at a point of time. Try to stick to the schedule for the next 30 to 40 days. Once you are able to do this, your confidence level will go up and thereafter you can take up bigger issues.

Remember the old adage: slow and steady wins the race'.

Try from to day, will you?
===================================

Focus on tasks and not on activities.

In managing our time, many of are conscious of what we are doing but not why we are doing what we are doing. We need to focus on the end result of our activities and not on merely on our activities. We need to distinguish between a 'task' and andactivity'. A task is the end result of an activity or a set of activities.

For example, 'reading a book' is an activity and the task is acquisition of knowledge. 'Jogging' is an activity and reducing weight is the task. If there is no link between an activity and a task in our conscious awareness, then we may not do that activity for long. They become meaningless rituals in our mind. If an activity or a set of activities does not produce the expected results, then it becomes a waste of time.

The ability to link and activity and task is an important ingredient for success. We need to start with an end in our mind and just not be merely doing an activity. Our inner dialogue should be in line with this simple principle. For example, we should say 'I am going to jog'. Instead of this we should say 'I will be one kg less in 30 days by jogging 15 minutes per day'. We should not say 'I am meditating' but say, 'I am improving my mental health by meditating'.

Whenever we are able to link an activity and a task, we will be able to measure the result of our outcome. By simply asking the question 'why am I doing this activity? we will be able to release our time a lot of unnecessary activities which 'fills up' our time. We will be able to distinguish between 'value adding' and 'non value adding activities'. An activity is value adding only when it takes us nearer to our goals and objectives. All other activities are non-value adding and are just 'filler' material for our time.

Time is such a precious resource, which should not be dissipated on meaningless activities. Today you print a question: why am I doing this? and place it in front of your worktable. This will help you to make

off-course corrections in your daily activities.

Just answer this question: why are you reading this page!

=====================================

Longest uninterrupted span.

Can you visualise a journey during which you are stopped every now and then and ultimately you arrive very late to the destination fully exhausted and frustrated? This is what comes to my mind when your flow of work is interrupted by frequent interruption such as telephone, visitors, unexpected meetings, etc.

From to day for the next one week you keep a log of the interruptions that you come across. Find out the longest span of un-interrupted time (other than sleeping of course!) when you were able to concentrate on the task on hand. You will be surprised that it is much shorter than you thought. In my experience people say that is not more than 15 to 20 minutes on a normal day!

You need to concentrate like a laser beam and your concentration should not be dissipated like a torch light beam. There is always a delay to get back to your flow every time you are interrupted. You may miss some very important point and forget what you were about to write or say if you are interrupted. More than any thing your valuable time will be wasted and you will end up taking much more time to complete the task in hand.

One of the ways to deal with this problem is to study your interruption log and find out the most frequent cause for your interruption and take counter measure. For example, if telephone is your most frequent interruption, you may divert all the calls or sit in a place where you will not be interrupted at all. Or you can keep the receiver off the hook. Adapt a method, which is most suitable to you.

One other idea is to wake up before others wake up and concentrate on your most important issue with out any interruption. Or you can keep awake till late in the night and beat the interruption. Find out a hiding place where you will not be disturbed at all. Inform people around you that you are not available for the next couple of hours (or minutes!) and request their cooperation.

Do some thing. Be innovative. Beat the interruption.

How many times you were interrupted before completing this page?

=====================================

Check your tools

While dealing with our time, we need to know that we should make our time to work for us. If think carefully, we will understand that there is no such thing as managing time! What we are trying to do is to do is ensure that we reach the goals that we fix with in the time that we fix for accomplishing the same. If we reach the goal with in the time that we fix, we say that we have managed our time effectively. But the truth is that we have managed our outcome and not the time.

One important factor for managing and controlling our outcome is the 'tools' that we use in our day-to-day life. In engineering, there is a term called tooling . When the tools that we have are appropriate, we are able to complete the task in hand fast and effectively. We can give a lot of examples for this term tooling with reference to time and productivity. A car is a tool. A good computer is a tool. A calculator is a tool. If these tools are appropriate or if we do not have the appropriate tool at the appropriate time, then there is a delay in completing our task in time. In the absence of right type of tools our anxiety to complete our task in time will only result in time pressure.

We need to match the tools we have with our goals and how big is our goal. A diary is a very important tool. Its usefulness is as good as we chose and use the same. Take a look of your diary and check if it suits your profile and meets your requirement. There are day-at-sight diary and week-at-sight diary. There are also month-at-sight diaries. Depending on your normal week and appointment schedule, choose the one which fits your requirement. Don't use a diary just because some one gives you as a New Year gift!

=======================================

Dump the out dated!

Just visualize your walking inside a room where you find useless things but in a good shape. You find a gramophone recorder player, a telex machine, old clothing, a tricycle which you loved riding when you were young etc. Think how useful there were at a point of time. Are they useful anymore? Do you need them now? Are they valuable at this point of time? Similarly go through your old address book and visiting card album and look through each and every thing they contain. Do you need them any more?

Compare this scene with your mind and the contents of your mind! What is it filled with? Consider your old habits and things you did some time back. List the various thoughts that occupy your mind and evaluate if they are relevant now? Consider the skills that you have now and check for their validity and usefulness at this point of time. Similarly, list the various activities that you do at this point of time using a time logging sheet and analyze the content of your time. Check if you need to do them any more?

When it comes to materials, we need to ask the question: do I need it now and what will happen if I discard them? Similarly you need to ask the same question with reference to all the things listed above. Such introspection will help you to revalidate the various things that you do on a day-to-day basis. You will be able to release a lot of your time for pursuing more important and relevant activities which matches with to day's context.

Try this idea and see the difference!
=====================

Time management and persistence

There are occasions when we do our best but the expected results do not appear. We may be working very hard and have all the skills required to perform our tasks, we may be doing the right things at the right time. We may be at the right place also. But still we may be disappointed about the results.

In such moments, we may get upset, disappointed and ultimately give up all our efforts and reconcile to the fact that we will not be able to make it. We will also conclude that we wasted all our time and efforts. When faced with failures in life, we will lose our interest on the task on hand.

This is the time when we need persistence, which is a very critical ingredient for success in life. Persistence is the ability to continue in any course of action with a determination and iron will. It is a mindset to steadfastly continue our efforts with a strong belief and faith that we will succeed one day or other.

I would like to inform what happened in the life of a person. He wrote for nearly nine years. No publisher accepted his writing or articles. But he never gave up and continued to write until became world's one of the famous writers. Can you guess who the person is? It is George Bernard Shaw! He had a definite purpose in life and a determination to persist in doing what he did. He believed that we would succeed and he succeeded.

Before I conclude, I would like to give a quotation, which is relevant in this context:

" I would look at one of my stone cutters hammering away at the rock, perhaps a hundred times without as much as a crack showing in it. Yet, at the hundred and first blow it would split into two, and I knew it was not that blow that did it, but all that had gone before!" - Jacob. A Riis

To day, make it a point to list all the projects that you once initiated once, but gave up your efforts due to temporary set backs or difficulties. Choose a project in which you still believe and want to succeed. From to day set aside some specific portion of your time and with an iron continue your efforts. You will understand how much will power you have inside you.

Will you try?

BROKEN HEART
My heart is broken,
it hurts inside.
Words now unspoken
and sadness resides.
We shared so much.
We're both good people.
Our lives did touch,
and we shared His steeple.
Why must you leave
and cause me to grieve?
We exchanged tokens.
Now, my heart is broken.
There's now a huge hole
left in my soul.
You chose to depart
and have broken my heart.

When you can't help but smile
When he stumbles over his words
Because he sounds so adorable
The cutest thing you've heard

When you stare into his eyes
And cant bring yourself to look away
And you picture your life with him
Every single day

When you talk for hours on end
Staying up all night
Just listening to each other

98. An ice-cold BEER will nonetheless let you have your way with it.
99. A BEER won't make you pick up some tampons when you go to the
grocery store.
100. A BEER won't accuse you of lying when you say you read Penthouse
"just for the articles". (You *are* lying, but the BEER won't accuse
you of it.)
101. A BEER won't fill up your car with cheesy 85-octane gas with the

excuse:"But I saved a quarter!"
102. A BEER won't accuse you of being a sexist pig if you say "Gene
Hackman" instead of "Gene Hackperson".
103. A BEER won't make you eat some experimental vegetarian meal that
tastes like boiled sheetrock with tomatoe sauce.
104. When you're through with a BEER, the thought of another BEER
doesn't make you ill.
105. A BEER can't have a "bad hair" day.

Safety tips to remember:

>These are some good tips -- We just can't be too careful anymore.
>
>Abduction Precautions for Women
>
>We can now add to the list of victims the retired 77- year-old TCU
>professor from Ft. Worth whose body was found last week in Oklahoma -- and
>the 11-year-old in Sarasota, FL.  Because of these recent abductions in
>daylight hours, refresh yourself on these things to do in an emergency
>situation.  This is for you, and for you to share   with your wife, your
>children, everyone you know.
>
>After reading this, forward it to someone you care about.  It never hurts
>to be careful in this crazy world we live in.
>
>1.  A tip from Tae Kwon Do:  The elbow is the strongest point on your body.
>  If you are close enough to use it, do so!  And aim for his/her throat or
>Adam's Apple.  Someone who can't breathe properly due to a well-placed blow
>to their throat will also not be able to do you  harm while you  are
>escaping!
>
>2.  I learned this from a tourist guide :  If a robber asks for your wallet
>and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM/HER.  Toss it away from you....Chances
>are that he/she is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you,
>and he/she will go for the wallet/purse.  While YOU RUN LIKE MAD IN THE
>OTHER DIRECTION!

>3.  If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail
>lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy.  The
>driver won't see you, but everybody else will.  This has saved lives.
>
>4.  Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating,
>working, etc., and just sit there (doing their checkbook, or making a list,
>etc.)  DON'T DO THIS!  The predator will be watching  you, and this would
>be the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a
>gun to your head, and tell you where to go.  AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR
>CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.

>5.  A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot or a parking

>(A)  Be aware:  Look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side
>floor, and in the back seat.
>
>(B)  If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger
>side door.  Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into
>their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars via the
>driver's side door.
>
>(C)  Look at the vehicle parked on the driver's side of your  vehicle, and
>the passenger side.  If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest to you
>(your car), you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a
>guard/policeman to walk you back out.

>IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY.  (And better paranoid than
>dead!!!)

>6.  ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs.  (Stairwells are
>horrible places to be alone and are also the perfect crime spot!)
>
>7.  If the predator has a gun and you are not  under his control, ALWAYS
>RUN!  The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and
>even then, it most likely WILL NOT be in a vital organ.  RUN!
>
>8.  As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic:  STOP THIS!  It may
>get you raped, or killed.  Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a
>good-looking, well-educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of
>unsuspecting women.  He would walk with a cane, or even limp, and often
>asked his intended victims "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle,
>which is when he would abduct his next victim.
>
>9.  Another Safety Point:  Someone just told me that her friend heard a
>crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police
>because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her,
>"Whatever you do,  DO NOT open the door!"  The lady then said that it
>sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that
>it would crawl to the street and get run over.  The policeman said, "We
>already have a unit on the way.  Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door."
>He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and
>uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off
>a baby.  He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by
>women saying that they hear baby crying outside their doors when they're
>home alone at night.
>
>Please pass this on and DO NOT open the door for a crying baby.  This
>e-mail should probably be taken seriously because the Crying Baby theory
>was mentioned on America's Most Wanted this past Saturday when they
>profiled the serial killer in Louisiana.
>
>I'd like you to forward this to all the women you know.  It may save a
>life.  A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle.  I was going to
>send this to the ladies only, but guys, if you love your mothers, wives,
>sisters, daughters, etc., you may want to pass it onto them, as well.
>
>Send this to any/every woman you know who may need to be reminded that the
>world we live in has a lot of crazies in it, and it's better to be safe
>than sorry!

KOOL TOOLS FOR U FREE

A special thanks goes to all of you who told me about these unique tools. And, if anyone else has a "cool tool" to share, be sure to let me know.
Customer Focus Calculator ("We We Monitor"!)
http://www.futurenowinc.com/wewe.htm
This has got to be one of my favorite cool tools. It analyzes a Web page and lets you know if the Web page is focused on you or on your customers. After all, shouldn't our Web pages be written for our customers . . . not ourselves?
Search Engine Optimization Tools
http://www.webconfs.com
This site has three different tools that are really cool. One is a Search Engine Spider Simulator, which displays exactly what a spider would see when it visits your page. Another frëe tool is the Google Backlink Checker, which lets you know who's linking to your site and what link text they're using. The last tool is the Similar Page Checker. We all know that "duplicate content" is a no no. This neat tool will determine the similarity between two pages.
Marketleap Search Engine Marketing Tools
http://www.marketleap.com/services/freetools/default.htm
My favorite tool on this page is the Link Popularity-Check. Enter your URL and up to three comparison URLs, and the site will let you know what your link popularity is in AllTheWeb, AltaVista, Google, Inktomi, and MSN. It also compares your site's link popularity to other URLs you listed as well as other sites on the Net. The Search Engine Saturation tool determines how many pages a given search engine has in its index for your Web site. You can compare your site to five other sites with this tool. Finally, the Keyword Verification Tool checks to see if your page is in the top three pages
Website Security Report
http://security.computer-concierge.net/security/website_security_report.asp
This very cool tool lets you find out how secure your Web site is. When I first used it, it found more holes in the security of my Web site than the laws allows, and I promptly changed to a different hostïng company!
Your Computer's Security
http://grc.com/default.htm
Gibson Research Corporation offers a really neat (and frëe) tool for checking the security of your computer: ShieldsUp. Scroll down on the page to the Hot Spots area, where you'll find the link to ShieldsUp. Be sure to go through each of the checks in the ShieldsUp section (File Sharing, Common Ports, etc.).
Reverse DNS Lookup
http://remote.12dt.com/rns/
This service converts an IP address to the host name by searching domain name service tables.
Doctor HTML
http://www2.imagiware.com/RxHTML/
Clïck on Single Page, and the frëe service will analyze your Web page based on document structure, image syntax, table analysis, browser support, verify hyperlinks, and much more.
GifBot by NetMechanic
http://www.netmechanic.com/accelerate.htm
GifBot will compress your GIF, JPEG, and animated GIF images by decreasing the file size without sacrificing the quality of the image. So, your pages load faster!
Bobby Online
http://bobby.watchfire.com/bobby/html/en/index.jsp
This online service allows you to test Web pages to help expose and repair barriers to accessibility and encourage compliance with existing accessibility guidelines. It's very important to make sure your Web pages are accessible for those who surf the Internet with disabilities.
AnyBrowser.com Screen Size Tester
http://anybrowser.com/ScreenSizeTest.html
Have you ever been to a Web site and not been able to scroll to the bottom of the page? The scroll bar is there, but you can't get down that far to scroll. It's not a pleasant experience. At the Screen Size Tester, you can test your Web pages in different screen resolutions so that you can be assured that all of your visitors can view your site in its entirety.
Anti-Spam and Security Fix for FormMail.pl Scrïpt
http://mailvalley.com/formmail/
"Formmail.pl, one of the most-used perl scripts on the Web, is designed to send data entered into a Web-form to an e-mail address. This scrïpt could be exploited by a malicious user who could use Formmail as a sp@m server. If you use this scrïpt, spammers may be able to use it to send sp@m freely using your server's resources." This site offers a patched version that prevents the scrïpt from being used by spammers.
Comprehensive Guide to .htaccess
http://www.javascriptkit.com/howto/htaccess.shtml
Though not a "tool" per se, this comprehensive tutorial about how to use the .htaccess file is excellent.
Top Ten Web Design Mistakes for 2002
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20021223.html
Though also not a tool, this handy list is something that we should all be aware of. For example, don't use horizontal scrolling!
Again, thanks to all of you who shared these wonderfully helpful tools with me. If I missed any (which I'm sure I did), please let me know (robin@searchengineworkshops.com). Part 2 of this articles provides additional cool tools that are also frëe.
