Potash and Sand filter for water treatment

The potassium permanganate dose needed for oxidation is 0.94mg per milligram of iron and 1.92mg per milligram of manganese. Rates of oxidation will depend on the pH. Iron oxidation can occur within 10 minutes if the pH is 7.2 or more, but can require an hour if the pH is 6.9, according to the University of Iowa. Manganese oxidation will be slower. It requires less than one hour only at a pH of 9.5 or above. You may need a detention tank to give adequate time for iron and manganese to oxidize. If you are treating taste and odor, use doses of potassium permanganate ranging from 0.25 to 20mg per liter according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
iron was removed in groundwater before passing through reverse osmosis membranes as pretreatment technique to avoid membrane fouling. Different pretreatment techniques are done to remove iron and save the membrane.
Many processes affecting the iron removal from the groundwater are applied in this case study. From the performance comparison between conventional and specific pre-treatment methods, we concluded that, every applied method has advantages and disadvantages in application. The most suitable pretreatment  technique for iron removal (concentration less than 5 mg/l) is a granular activated carbon (GAC) filter which has higher adsorption capacity and leads to low
operating cost.
The depth of the GAC media is estimated based on the average contact time in this media, which is recommended to be 10 to 12 min. For example, if a filter is designed for a surface loading rate of 4 m3/m2 h, the depth of the GAC media should be at least 0.66 m (4 m3/m2 h ×10 min/60 min per h=0.66 m to 4 m3/m2 h ×12 min/60 min per h=0.8 m, i.e., 0.66 0.8 m)15. For the following reasons28, we used the granular activated carbon in the adsorption of ferrous.
Potassium Permanganate and Depth Filtration
Conventional treatment for iron removal from groundwater consists of oxidation and depth filtration. Oxygen or stronger oxidants, such as potassium permanganate (KMnO4), are generally used for Fe 2+oxidation. The solid products of oxidation (FeOOH.H2O) are then filtered through a granular bed, commonly green sand19. The potassium permanganate dose applied must be carefully controlled to minimize any excess passing into supply which could give a pink color to the water. Potassium permanganate oxidation tends to form a colloidal precipitates which may not be well retained by the filters.

sand-anthracite filter for iron removal

A sand-anthracite filter or dual media filter/multi-media filter is primarily used for the removal of turbidity and suspended solids as low as 10-20 microns. Inside a sand-anthracite filter is a layered bed of filter media. The bed is graded from bottom to top as follows:

1st layer=gravel support bed
2nd layer
=
2mm filter sand
3rd layer
=
fine filter sand
4th layer
=
anthracite
Anthracite has a high affinity for iron, especially when it is coated with potassium permanganate, and is therefore often employed for iron and manganese removal.

Assamese Muslim marriage are different from the rest of India

11 unique ways how Assamese Muslim marriage are different from the rest of India. Let's check it out -
(1) Aangothi pindhuwa, the ring ceremony. From here the unique assamese Muslim marriage begins. It's a pre-wedding event, also known as juroon, which happens generally few months before the actual marriage. In this function, a ring is gifted to the bride by her mother inlaw as token of love and to officialy endorse the new relation.
(2) Maah-haalodhi and the bath.
Bathing this way is an age old custom of the Assamese Muslims bride and grooms, in their respective homes. It takes place just a day before Nikaah. Most interesting part of this function is the demanding of money by the childrens from the dora/koina( bride/bridegroom) for applying turmeric & moong daal paste on their face, neck, hands and feet. Earlier singing of biyar naam(marriage songs) were a part of it, but now it has been gradually disappearing.
(3) Tamuli, the funniest character of the event. He is the most unique character of any assamese Muslim marriage. A good friend is being chosen by the groom to accompany and help him in everything on that big day till the nikaah. After the nikaah his
duty ceases automatically and looses all his importance when the bride takes over his place and gets the first official control over her newlywed husband.
(4)For the nikaah, a gorgeous pair of mekhela chadar (a traditional assamese saree in two piece) is draped around the bride's body in a very beautiful style along with all kinds of traditional and modern jewelleries. For the groom the dress code is Sherwani and Paaguri (turban) for Nikaah making him feel like the most luxurious royal for the day. Next day a wedding reception is hosted by the groom's family where generally formal suits are seen wearing since centuries.
(5) Dora Adora, that is the welcoming of the bridegroom and Tamuli. It's the most awaited event for the kids of the bride's family.
Many a times, the bridegroom is asked to cut a ribbon at the entrance before entering the marriage hall. After this they are accompanied to the hall and made to seat in the most beautiful chair painstakingly decorated exclusively for them, where a bunch of kids surrounds to garland them, sprinkle rose water and to put aatar (Islamic fragrance) on his and tamuli's dress, followed by feeding them with milk and sweets. In return, the Dora and Tamuli both give gifts to the kids for welcoming them.
(6) Exchange of traditional trays(bota) containing Tamul and Paan (i.e, Areca nut and Betel leaf) happens only in Assam. This event takes place immediately after the preceding event of dora-aadora. Such is the importance of Tamul-Paan in our society.
(7) The Qubul hain time for other Indian muslim is "Moi Kobul korisu" for Assamese Muslims. Here, in front of everyone, the guardians of both the families ask the couple to announce it officially if they have accepted the new relation and in reply they quote the famous sentence "moi kobul korisu" meaning 'I accept'.
(8) Nikahor laddoo, Jo khaaye wo bhi pastaye aur jo naa khaye wo bhi pastaye. A motichur ki laddo is generally distributed immediately after the nikaak to celebrate and commemorate the union of the two newlyweds, followed by an extremely delicious lunch or dinner depending upon the time. The most favorite menu for any assamese Muslim wedding includes Kurma/bhuna pulau, parantha, chicken roast, kofta, kabab, fish fry and the likes. Kurma pulau and chicken roast are the innovation and gift of Assamese Muslim to the world. These two dishes are a blend of Iranian and Assamese flavor. Although these dishes are popular among the Assamese muslims, its not restricted to them, and is made by many today.
(9) After the nikaah the inlaws changes the bride's earlier dress with the new pair of mekhela chaadar, new jewelleries and new shoes gifted by them before she is accompanied to her new home.
(10) Dorai cake kata. Cutting the very beautifully decorated icing cake by the groom is the last most unique and happening event at the the bride's home. Here specially the girls hide the knife and ask the groom to search for it with a condition of paying a huge penalty if he fails in finding it, which he is bound to fail. After all how can you win over girls.
(11) After reaching her new home, she receives a warm welcome by washing her feet in a bowl of perfumeted water by the groom's family(mostly girls and children). In return she shower the entrance floor with coins of different denominations. All the kids jump over each other competing to collect the most of them. This is how she starts her new journey of life.

Sawal Pir(R) Hzt Syed Ali Masum(R) Assamese Syed Kuhiyaar boriya Dawon

ONE VERY OLD PIC OF THE SITE

SHORT LIFE HISTORY OF SAWAL PEER SAHIB[R]:

Islam was spread in India by a band of missionary saints and not by kings or conservative Alims churned by Madrasas. These broadminded saints introduced innovations to adapt to Indian soil and achieved the targets-spreading Islam and achieving communal harmony. They were endowed by Allah Taala with miraculous powers that drew to them millions of people of all communities and this helped the cause of Islam.A few of these saints came to Assam and the most prominent was Azan Pir (R).According to historian Nila Gohain(Ref.Kharaigurir Azan?), Sawal Pir(R) came to Assam a few years before Azan Pir's arrival. Shri Gohain has also stated that Sawal Pir became head of the Muslim Community after Azan Pir's (R) death.

As per a Zikir, Azan Pir was in Assam around the year 1635. From this, Sawal Pir's arrival in Assam can also be determined.

Ahom king had witnessed the miraculous powers of Azan Pir. He, therefore, tried to ascertain the genuineness of Sawal Pir?s profession by knowing whether he possessed similar powers. He put Sawal Pir(R) to three tests(ref Nila Gohain). One, to cross the Dikhow river on foot, without a boat. Two, to withstand three poisoned arrows shot at his hands and feet. Three, to remain for a week buried underground without access to water or air. Sawal Pir (R) passed all three tests. The king was highly impressed and he donated a big piece of land, near the place where he was buried for a week, for his residence. A princess was also given in marriage to him and a pond was constructed nearby in honour of the princess. The name of the princess was  Khenduri Konwari [or Henduri Konwari] and the pond is still called Khenduri Pukhuri(Henduri Pukhuri).
After his burial for a week when he was brought overground, SawalPir was alive and well but he kept his eyes shut. He told the kings men to move his head to face uninhabited areas. And when he opened his eyes, his anger (at being kept underground) burst forth from his eyes in the form of rays that burnt down a sugarcane plantation that stood in front of him. From that time onward the sugarcane that grew on that land appeared as half burnt. The descendants of the Pir have been called Kuhiarbarias(or sugarcane people) for commemorating this miraculous event.

The real name of Sawal Pir(R) was Ali Masum. Once, while he was a grown-up child, he turned himself to a baby for sometime, in order to teach a lesson to his mother. So he was popularly known as 'Sawal Pir' as Sawal means a baby in Assamese.

The grave of this saint with miraculous powers lies in Ramugaon near Simaluguri of Sibsagar district. For decades the grave has been well protected by neighbouring villagers, all Hindus. They respect it  and get results. And other Muslims, who visit his Mazar get miraculous benefits. I know two definite instances. The conservation and improvement of the Mazar had  been undertaken by a committee headed by Marhum Syed Imran Hussain of Borbheta, Jorhat. After great efforts land for the access road has been purchased. This is a big achievement. But the road has to be built on the land. A well has to be dug. A wall has to be erected. A regular Khadim has to be appointed with monthly salary. All this requires considerable funds. Recently Dr. Syed Iftikhar Ahmed has generously promised to finance the entire cost of building a small two-room RCC structure: one room for the Khadim and the other one for use by visitors. A big portion of the required fund has already been paid.

We are his descendants in Assam. We are called kuhiyaarboriya dawon.

Dawons you know a legendary animal half Lion and half Tiger a mount of Hindu Goddess Durga- a deva anga i.e. a part of divinity. The Syeds who came to Assam during Ahom king period  all having some super natural powers. Hence in the reign of some Ahom King minted the title on Syeds as Devanga or Dawon as learnt from our forefathers. In Upper Assam Syeds are called Dawon, In lower Assam Syeds are called Khalifa.

Groundwater contamination cases rising in State
Ajit Patowary
GUWAHATI, Jan 28 - Cases of contamination of groundwater in the State are swelling up everyday, making groundwater unsafe for consumption. According to the official data, the number of the State’s districts which have got their groundwater contaminated by fluoride and arsenic has shot up to 22 and 21 respectively from 19 and 20 respectively in 2014-’15.
According to the data available with this newspaper, in 2014-’15, the arsenic affected districts of the State included Baksa, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Cachar, Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Goalpara, Hailakandi, Jorhat, Kamrup, Karimganj, Kokrajhar, Lakhimpur, Morigaon, Nagaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar and Sonitpur.
This year, Tinsukia has also been found to be affected by arsenic, raising the number of affected districts to 21, said the sources.
Till 2013-’14, nine districts – Barpeta, Dhubri, Goalpara, Golaghat, Jorhat, Kamrup, Karbi Anglong, Karimganj and Nagaon – were found to be affected by fluoride.
But in 2014-’15, with the inclusion of Baksa, Cachar, Chirang, Darrang, Dibrugarh, Morigaon, Nalbari, Sivasagar, Sonitpur and Udalguri, the number of affected districts rose to 19.
In 2015-’16, with the inclusion of Bongaigaon, Lakhimpur and Tinsukia, the number of fluoride-affected districts have shot up to 22, sources said.
According to experts here, the trend of rise in the number of fluoride and arsenic affected districts should be studied, together with the impact of such contamination of groundwater, which is used by the people of many areas in these districts for the purpose of drinking as well as domestic use, on human and animal health.
Except in the two districts of Karbi Anglong and Nagaon, no comprehensive health impact studies of groundwater contamination in the rest of the districts has so far been known to have been conducted, said the experts. The origin of fluoride so far is known to be geogenic.

The State’s Department of Mining and Mineral may undertake such studies, involving also the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and the North Eastern Regional Institute of Water and Land Management (NERIWALM) in this regard, said the experts
