YOUR OWN SMALL BUSINESS

The booming areas

"Opportunities today are plenty," says Raju Hirani Of 3 Idiots fame. "You have to decide where you want to play the game." His recommendations:

1. "Infrastructure is a booming area. Housing is awfully short in India, so we have to build houses for millions of people. Housing will continue to be a big area for some time.

2. Retail and distribution are booming.

3. I would call media and entertainment the most exciting sector. What was India-centric will go global, like Hollywood has.

4. The Life Sciences space is very interesting; both in terms of medical care and medicine."

5. The Environmental issues are opening up after Copenhegen. The Water Treatment Industry is alone 15,000 Crore .

Your Team:

entrepreneurs should bring in people who are really good at what they do and also to focus on ensuring the team members get along with each other.

Some entrepreneurs confessed they made the initial mistake of hiring friends and people they liked, but soon realised that friends were not always the best employees.

TEAM MANAGEMENT: Be a coach, rather than the star player. Let others play.

MONEY WISE:

One entrepreneur shared that he consciously stayed away from non-essentials like an extravagant office, equipments, etc. The focus was on superior execution and high quality service.

It's tempting to dream of a corner office, a pool table and expensive chairs, but give it some time. Start small and start efficient. Being better is more important than being bigger.

Marketing :

Marketing strategy kept changing, depending on what worked -- direct mailers, e-mail marketing, presentations at seminars, etc.

Marketing a start-up business is a 24/7 activity and you need to pay attention to the message you're sending out to existing and prospective clients. Your message has to be tailored to meet the customer's expectations.

SERVICE: The customer is always right , He is the King….So your service should be of highest quality

In any service-led business, you will always have consumers who will be happy and unhappy with your service. You have to adopt a service level that keeps your customers happy and loyal to you. This requires maturity and vision and, often, a fair amount of concessions on your part. Until you become established, you need your customers more than they need you.

Attract great people to join your TEAM ...first tip to entrepreneur

Have you seen the recent hindi movie ROCKET SINGH.....just look how ranbir Kapoor collected his team members smartly......

I thought the Rocket Singh Movie is based on my experiences..he he he..

So, the Fisrt tip is ......Attract great people to join your cause and to remain committed.

Although many entrepreneurs take all the credit for the success of their companies, I've yet to come across an entrepreneur who has managed to build a business on his or her own.

Imagine there is a great treasure in the jungle, but it's too heavy to find on your own. You need to enlist experienced, energetic and talented people to help you extract the treasure and return to civilisation without murdering each other on the way back.

Donate through SMS

Subject: Donate through SMS

Hi Saleem,

I came across your blog post where I saw you mentioning about the concept of micro-donations through SMS. I liked your idea of letting potential donors know about NGO's which are working in the area they would like to contribute in. However, I feel that though there may be lots of people who'll find this useful, but there is another completely unique idea to approach the same problem-

The recent Haiti disaster has seen a trend picking up in USA where a user who is willing to donate for a cause is charged $10 in his next billing statement on SMS'ing a certain keyword to a specific number. This earning is used as a donation towards the disaster relief.

A quick one hour research on Google showed me that nothing like this exists in India so far. What if there was a service where people could SMS something like "Donate APFloods" to 56767 (which is a premium number charged at Rs. 3/- per SMS to the sender) and whatever we earn from the message is passed as a donation to the right NGO who is working for that disaster's relief? There are plenty of Indian companies who are willing to rent out such short-codes for a very small monthly fees and will share revenue based on incoming SMS volumes.

I believe there are lots and lots of people in India who would not mind spending a small amount for donating towards a cause. If we consider the economies of scale, even a small amount (say, Rs 1.5 earned per SMS) x 50,000 SMS received would mean a whopping Rs. 75000 in collections! Of course, we can keep a certain margin to ourselves to maintain the technical infrastructure required to keep this running.

A word about who I am - I am working as a Web Application Developer in a web 2.0 startup in India called SlideShare (www.slideshare.net), a place to find and share powerpoint presentations online. I am 25 years old and based in New Delhi.

If you find this interesting, I'll love to hear back from you.
