Safety tips to remember:

>These are some good tips -- We just can't be too careful anymore.
>
>Abduction Precautions for Women
>
>We can now add to the list of victims the retired 77- year-old TCU
>professor from Ft. Worth whose body was found last week in Oklahoma -- and
>the 11-year-old in Sarasota, FL.  Because of these recent abductions in
>daylight hours, refresh yourself on these things to do in an emergency
>situation.  This is for you, and for you to share   with your wife, your
>children, everyone you know.
>
>After reading this, forward it to someone you care about.  It never hurts
>to be careful in this crazy world we live in.
>
>1.  A tip from Tae Kwon Do:  The elbow is the strongest point on your body.
>  If you are close enough to use it, do so!  And aim for his/her throat or
>Adam's Apple.  Someone who can't breathe properly due to a well-placed blow
>to their throat will also not be able to do you  harm while you  are
>escaping!
>
>2.  I learned this from a tourist guide :  If a robber asks for your wallet
>and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM/HER.  Toss it away from you....Chances
>are that he/she is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you,
>and he/she will go for the wallet/purse.  While YOU RUN LIKE MAD IN THE
>OTHER DIRECTION!
>
>3.  If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car, kick out the back tail
>lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy.  The
>driver won't see you, but everybody else will.  This has saved lives.
>
>4.  Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating,
>working, etc., and just sit there (doing their checkbook, or making a list,
>etc.)  DON'T DO THIS!  The predator will be watching  you, and this would
>be the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a
>gun to your head, and tell you where to go.  AS SOON AS YOU GET INTO YOUR
>CAR, LOCK THE DOORS AND LEAVE.
>
>5.  A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot or a parking
>garage:
>
>(A)  Be aware:  Look around you, look into your car, at the passenger side
>floor, and in the back seat.
>
>(B)  If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger
>side door.  Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into
>their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars via the
>driver's side door.
>
>(C)  Look at the vehicle parked on the driver's side of your  vehicle, and
>the passenger side.  If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest to you
>(your car), you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a
>guard/policeman to walk you back out.
>
>IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY.  (And better paranoid than
>dead!!!)
>
>6.  ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs.  (Stairwells are
>horrible places to be alone and are also the perfect crime spot!)
>
>7.  If the predator has a gun and you are not  under his control, ALWAYS
>RUN!  The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; and
>even then, it most likely WILL NOT be in a vital organ.  RUN!
>
>8.  As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic:  STOP THIS!  It may
>get you raped, or killed.  Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a
>good-looking, well-educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of
>unsuspecting women.  He would walk with a cane, or even limp, and often
>asked his intended victims "for help" into his vehicle or with his vehicle,
>which is when he would abduct his next victim.
>
>9.  Another Safety Point:  Someone just told me that her friend heard a
>crying baby on her porch the night before last, and she called the police
>because it was late and she thought it was weird. The police told her,
>"Whatever you do,  DO NOT open the door!"  The lady then said that it
>sounded like the baby had crawled near a window, and she was worried that
>it would crawl to the street and get run over.  The policeman said, "We
>already have a unit on the way.  Whatever you do, DO NOT open the door."
>He told her that they think a serial killer has a baby's cry recorded and
>uses it to coax women out of their homes thinking that someone dropped off
>a baby.  He said they have not verified it, but have had several calls by
>women saying that they hear baby crying outside their doors when they're
>home alone at night.
>
>Please pass this on and DO NOT open the door for a crying baby.  This
>e-mail should probably be taken seriously because the Crying Baby theory
>was mentioned on America's Most Wanted this past Saturday when they
>profiled the serial killer in Louisiana.
>
>I'd like you to forward this to all the women you know.  It may save a
>life.  A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle.  I was going to
>send this to the ladies only, but guys, if you love your mothers, wives,
>sisters, daughters, etc., you may want to pass it onto them, as well.
>
>Send this to any/every woman you know who may need to be reminded that the
>world we live in has a lot of crazies in it, and it's better to be safe
>than sorry!

KOOL TOOLS FOR U FREE

A special thanks goes to all of you who told me about these unique tools. And, if anyone else has a "cool tool" to share, be sure to let me know.
Customer Focus Calculator ("We We Monitor"!)
http://www.futurenowinc.com/wewe.htm
This has got to be one of my favorite cool tools. It analyzes a Web page and lets you know if the Web page is focused on you or on your customers. After all, shouldn't our Web pages be written for our customers . . . not ourselves?
Search Engine Optimization Tools
http://www.webconfs.com
This site has three different tools that are really cool. One is a Search Engine Spider Simulator, which displays exactly what a spider would see when it visits your page. Another frëe tool is the Google Backlink Checker, which lets you know who's linking to your site and what link text they're using. The last tool is the Similar Page Checker. We all know that "duplicate content" is a no no. This neat tool will determine the similarity between two pages.
Marketleap Search Engine Marketing Tools
http://www.marketleap.com/services/freetools/default.htm
My favorite tool on this page is the Link Popularity-Check. Enter your URL and up to three comparison URLs, and the site will let you know what your link popularity is in AllTheWeb, AltaVista, Google, Inktomi, and MSN. It also compares your site's link popularity to other URLs you listed as well as other sites on the Net. The Search Engine Saturation tool determines how many pages a given search engine has in its index for your Web site. You can compare your site to five other sites with this tool. Finally, the Keyword Verification Tool checks to see if your page is in the top three pages
Website Security Report
http://security.computer-concierge.net/security/website_security_report.asp
This very cool tool lets you find out how secure your Web site is. When I first used it, it found more holes in the security of my Web site than the laws allows, and I promptly changed to a different hostïng company!
Your Computer's Security
http://grc.com/default.htm
Gibson Research Corporation offers a really neat (and frëe) tool for checking the security of your computer: ShieldsUp. Scroll down on the page to the Hot Spots area, where you'll find the link to ShieldsUp. Be sure to go through each of the checks in the ShieldsUp section (File Sharing, Common Ports, etc.).
Reverse DNS Lookup
http://remote.12dt.com/rns/
This service converts an IP address to the host name by searching domain name service tables.
Doctor HTML
http://www2.imagiware.com/RxHTML/
Clïck on Single Page, and the frëe service will analyze your Web page based on document structure, image syntax, table analysis, browser support, verify hyperlinks, and much more.
GifBot by NetMechanic
http://www.netmechanic.com/accelerate.htm
GifBot will compress your GIF, JPEG, and animated GIF images by decreasing the file size without sacrificing the quality of the image. So, your pages load faster!
Bobby Online
http://bobby.watchfire.com/bobby/html/en/index.jsp
This online service allows you to test Web pages to help expose and repair barriers to accessibility and encourage compliance with existing accessibility guidelines. It's very important to make sure your Web pages are accessible for those who surf the Internet with disabilities.
AnyBrowser.com Screen Size Tester
http://anybrowser.com/ScreenSizeTest.html
Have you ever been to a Web site and not been able to scroll to the bottom of the page? The scroll bar is there, but you can't get down that far to scroll. It's not a pleasant experience. At the Screen Size Tester, you can test your Web pages in different screen resolutions so that you can be assured that all of your visitors can view your site in its entirety.
Anti-Spam and Security Fix for FormMail.pl Scrïpt
http://mailvalley.com/formmail/
"Formmail.pl, one of the most-used perl scripts on the Web, is designed to send data entered into a Web-form to an e-mail address. This scrïpt could be exploited by a malicious user who could use Formmail as a sp@m server. If you use this scrïpt, spammers may be able to use it to send sp@m freely using your server's resources." This site offers a patched version that prevents the scrïpt from being used by spammers.
Comprehensive Guide to .htaccess
http://www.javascriptkit.com/howto/htaccess.shtml
Though not a "tool" per se, this comprehensive tutorial about how to use the .htaccess file is excellent.
Top Ten Web Design Mistakes for 2002
http://www.useit.com/alertbox/20021223.html
Though also not a tool, this handy list is something that we should all be aware of. For example, don't use horizontal scrolling!
Again, thanks to all of you who shared these wonderfully helpful tools with me. If I missed any (which I'm sure I did), please let me know (robin@searchengineworkshops.com). Part 2 of this articles provides additional cool tools that are also frëe.
