DPCC has taken decision that Hospital having 50 beds or more shall install Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) for the treatment of waste water generated and for recycling of treated effluent for use in horticulture, air conditioning/ cooling plants and flushing of toilet etc.
In hospitals that have ETP facility, the treatment is carried out using special scientific process and generally involves three stages, primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of treatment. [14]

Average water consumption 750 liter / bed / day (International norm). Please calculate daily water consumption from borewell to over head tank using water meter. 80% of total water in nover head tanks is wasted as waste water. This should be the capacity of the STP to be installed at the hospital. (See table below)
Capacity of overhead tank from where water is distributed = A Liter
Number of times Over Head Tanks Filled up in a day = B Nos
Total water requirement for use at different points = A x B Liter/day
Quantity of Effluent , liter per day = 80 % of ( A x B )
Sourcess of waste water
1. Bed in Hospital= Nos @ 500 liter per bed (DPCC norm)= Liter
2. Employee in Hospital = nos @ 40 liter per employee= Liter
3. Hostels- Persons = nos @ 150 liters per person. = Liter
4. Kitchen Meals= nos@ 10 liter per meal = Liter
So, Total Quantity of discharge: --------- liter per day
Health Stream Literature Summary - Issue 46 - June 2007
The treatment of hospital waste water: an appraisal
Pauwels, B. and Verstraete, W. (2006) Journal of Water & Health, (4) 405-416.
PRE TREATMENT:
Chemical treatment usually involves the use of 1% sodium hypochlorite solution with a minimum contact period of 30 min or other standard disinfectants like, 10-14 gm of bleaching powder in 1 l water, 70% ethanol, 4% formaldehyde, 70% isopropyl alcohol, 2 5% povidone iodine, or 6% hydrogen peroxide

Primary treatment

Consists of temporarily holding the sewage in a basin where the settled and floating materials are removed and the remaining liquid subjected to secondary treatment. Primary treatment usually removes from 30 to 40% of the BOD. After this treatment the BOD and COD levels usually comes down to 25% of its initial levels.

Secondary treatment

Removes the dissolved and suspended biological matter and is typically performed by indigenous, water borne microorganisms in a managed habitat. This treatment uses microbial degradation, aerobic or anaerobic, to reduce the concentration of the organic compounds. The combined use of primary and secondary treatment reduces approximately 80 to 90% of the BOD. In this stage, there is settling down of the suspended solid contents of the biological waste as thick slurry called sludge, while the treated fluid undergoes tertiary treatment. Through this process, 95% of the pollutants from the waste water are removed.

Tertiary treatment

Uses chemicals to remove inorganic compounds and pathogens. This is the final stage of treatment where the effluent after secondary treatment first is mixed with sodium hypochlorite and then the effluent is passed through dual media filter (DMF) and activated carbon filter (ACF) where sand, anthracite, and activated carbon are used as filtration media. Finally, the treated water is let into a small well to recharge the water table. This treated waste water now can be used for gardening, toilets, and laundry purposes. [15]

JOKES HUMOUR ---Why she undergo a operation instead ?

Why she undergo a operation instead ?
A 45 -yr. old woman had a heart attack and was taken to the hospital.
While on the operating table she had a near death experience.

Seeing God she asked "Is my time up?"

God said, "No, you have another 43 years, 2 months and 8 days to live."

Upon recovery, the woman decided to stay in the hospital
to have a face-lift, liposuction, breast implants and a tummy tuck.
She even had someone come in and change her hair colour and brighten her teeth!

Since she had so much more time to live, she figured she might as well make the most of it.

After her last operation, she was released from the hospital.
While crossing the street on her way home, she was killed by an ambulance.

Arriving in front of God, she demanded,
"I thought you said I had another 43 years, 2 months and 8 days
Why didn't you pull me from out of the path of the ambulance?"

You'll love this!!!!!

God : "didn't recognize you at that time"

OHH GOD!!!!  By Deshpande Punit

There came a big flood, and the water around Bhola's house was rising steadily..

Bhola was standing on the porch, watching water rising all around him, when a man in a boat came along and called to Bhola, "Get in the boat and I'll get you out of here. Bhola replied, "No thanks, God will save me."

Bhola went into the house, and the water was starting to pour in. So, he went up to the second floor.

As he looked out, another man in a boat came along, and he called to Bhola, "Get in the boat and I'll get you out of here."

Again, Bhola replied, "No thanks. God will save me."

The water kept rising. So, Bhola got out onto the roof.

A helicopter flew over, and the pilot called down to Bhola, "I'll drop you a rope, grab onto it, and I'll get you out of here."

Again Bhola replied, "No thanks. God will save me."

The water rose and rose, and soon nearly covered the whole house. Bhola fell in, and drowned.

When he arrived in Heaven, he saw God, and asked Him, "Why didn't you save me from that terrible flood? Did I not show you my faith?"

With a loving but irritated tone God replied, "What more would you have me do? I sent people in two boats and a helicopter."

Diet in Cardiac Diseases

Diet in Cardiac Diseases
The best diet for a healthy heart is a diet low in fatty and sugary foods and rich in fruits and vegetables which are quick foods that require little or no preparation time. They are loaded with important nutrients like vitamins, minerals, fiber and disease fighting antioxidants.

Unsaturated oils (refined oils) help maintain blood cholesterol levels if consumed in recommended quantities. Thus it is advisable to use only 4-5 teaspoons of cooking oil per day and a variety of refined oils should be taken. Select one from each group for your daily cooking purpose. Ratio of both oils should be 1:1. It is advised to use oil from Group A for 15 days and oil from Group B for 15 days or lunch with oil from Group A and dinner with oil from Group B.

Group A: Sunflower / safflower/ corn / soybean

Group B: Mustard / groundnut / olive/ rice bran

High fiber food items like whole cereals [whole wheat flour ( atta ), wheat bran, whole wheat bread, bajra , jowar , oats], whole pulses ( dals with skin, rajmah , chola, kala chana, chowli etc.), leafy vegetables, salad vegetables and whole fruits are recommended.

Good quality protein like egg white, soy, fish chicken and dairy protein (toned/ skimmed cow's milk and milk products like curds and paneer prepared with cow's toned milk) is recommended. Oily fish like ravas (salmon), herring, bangda (mackerel), tuna , tarli (oil sardine) and nuts like almonds and walnuts are rich in omega 3 fatty acids and found to be beneficial for heart. All these food items are advised in recommended quantities.

It is advised to avoid fatty meats like ham, bacon, yolk of egg, red meat, organ meat, shrimps, lobster, prawns, etc as well as alcohol, aerated drinks, squashes, fruit juices (lack fiber), canned, tinned, processed and preserved foods e.g. tinned fruits, sauces, processed cheese.

Diet for Hypertension
A vegetarian's diet contains more potassium, complex carbohydrates, fiber, calcium, magnesium, vitamin C all of which may have a favourable influence on blood pressure. It can be a great benefit to start lowering your blood pressure naturally.

Calcium: Consume skim / toned milk and milk products (curds and paneer). This milk is low in fat, but very high in Vitamin D and calcium, both of which are known to combat high blood pressure. Calcium can also be found in fish (sardines, salmon, mackerel), nuts, sunflower seeds (unsalted) and green leafy vegetables (beetroot leaves, turnip greens, arbi leaves, chowlai , methileaves, cauliflower greens, celery leaves, parsley, mint, curry leaves, drum stick leaves and radish leaves). Cereals like ragi (nachni) and whole pulses like kala chana and rajmah , soybean and tofu are also rich in calcium. Spices include hing , ajwain , khas khas , black pepper ( kali mirch ), cumin seeds ( zeera ), coriander ( dhania ), cloves ( laung ) and mustard seeds ( sarson ).

Magnesium: Magnesium rich foods such as pulses and legumes and dark green leafy vegetables are an excellent way to lower blood pressure. Other good sources of magnesium are almonds, walnuts, coriander seeds (dhania ), cumin seeds ( zeera ), ginger, turmeric, plums and mango figs, whole grains, soy products, broccoli, oysters and mackerel. Magnesium has the effect of relaxing the blood vessels which allows the blood to flow easier.

Potassium: Restricting sodium (salt) intake to lower blood pressure appears to work better if accompanied by increasing potassium. Pulses and legumes, soybeans and cereals like bajra , jowar ,ragi (nachni), whole wheat flour ( atta ) are good sources of potassium. Spices rich in potassium include coriander seeds ( dhania ), cumin seeds ( zeera ) and methi seeds. Vegetables like potato, sweet potato, yam ( suran ), tomatoes, karela , brinjal, drumstick, green papaya and dark green leafy vegetables like spinach, sarson ka saag , chowlai and coriander leaves are high in potassium. Potassium rich fruits include sweet lime, apricots, amla, bael, cherries, lemon, mango, muskmelon, watermelon, peaches, plums and seetaphal. Coconut water and vegetable soups are also rich in potassium.

Vitamin C: It seems to expand blood vessels and constricted arteries, consequently helping to lower blood pressure. Vitamin C rich foods include strawberries, lime, sweet lime ( mausambi) , orange, guava ( peru ), amla, radish ( muli ) leaves, fenugreek leaves ( methi ), coriander ( dhania), cabbage, capsicum, green chillies, cauliflower and bitter gourd ( karela ).

Research also shows that eating foods high in fiber, such as oat bran, fruits, and vegetables can significantly reduce high blood pressure, and even improve blood pressure in healthy individuals. Omega-3 fats, typically found in oily fish, garlic and flax seeds are known to have a lowering effect on blood pressure.

Avoid foods like pickles, papads and salted chutneys, biscuits and namkeens, all sauces and soy sauce, cheese, salted butter, margarine, mayonnaise, baking powder, bicarbonate of soda, ajinomoto, breads, cakes, pastries, cornflakes, salted chips, nuts, popcorns, bacon, ham, sausages, malted beverages, boost, bournvita, preserved foods and canned foods.

To light up streets, govt to produce fuel from waste

To light up streets, govt to produce fuel from waste

Abantika Ghosh | TNN

New Delhi: In a first Delhi government has set up a CNG plant at its secretariat canteen that will produce fuel from waste. The output will be worth Rs 70,000 per month. Also on the anvil — in association with BARC — are similar plants at government hospitals and one 100kg plant at the Ghazipur abbatoir which will be used for streetlighting.
''It will serve the dual purpose of generating eco-friendly fuel and also be a solution for our waste management problems which are considerable. Creation of a dumping ground, apart from being an environmental hazard entails wastage of resources in transporting and disposing of the waste,'' explained chief secretary Rakesh Mehta.
The environment department had earlier written to all
hotels and restaurants in the city to give their waste oil which can be made into fuel but it did not generate any response. When officials sat down to analyze the issue, they realized restaurants make quite a packet by selling used oil to small dhabas. ''That is when we decided to attempt something which would be financially beneficial to the restaurants too,'' said an official.
The city government had earlier contacted the Khadi Village Commission for the project but the scale proved to be too much for them. After that entered a Swedish company which made a couple of visits but things did not work out. ''Finally Bhabha Atomic Research Centre stepped in and they are the ones who are doing it now. There have been similar projects in Mumbai and Pune and some hotels have expressed a keenness. The plant
in our canteen should be ready in the next two-three months after which we will also invite hotels for a demonstration. We hope to get them interested,'' Mehta added.
The government is hoping to get housing societies interested too. While the plant may not be viable for individual house owners, a group of people pooling together resources — and kitchen waste — to set up a similar plant in their premises may be the best solution to rising LPG costs and a worsening power situation. ''The biogas may be used in generator too,'' Mehta said.
The scale of operations for the abbatoir plant is still not clear as the project is on the drawing board. But if even a part of the power consumption for streetlighting is met, Delhi may become the first city in the country to have such an ecofriendly setup in place.

The POPO principle :

The POPO principle :

Anyone who follows office politics will be familiar with the POPO principle.

POPO ( Pissed On and Passed Over) refers to a hardworking individual whose integrity and work ethic get him nowhere, who finds himself overlooked for rewards and promotions, sidelined by craftier colleagues. Partly because he's too straight and naive and partly because he just doesn't know how to play the game,

Mr POPO ends up as a spectacular underachiever.

People seems to take me for granted. I feels cheated, even a little bewildered. I am not aware what is required in the present moment.. I don't know how to play the game in the present circumstances. The situation has changed. Accordingly my goal & required actions should change. But I am not doing so. I am letting people Pissed On me and Passed Over me.

Understanding Of How Men And Boys Think are:

Understanding Of How Men And Boys Think are:

1 Men really are sex-crazed

The brain's part inked to sexual pursuit is two-and-a-half times larger in males than females.

2 They're programmed to perv

The testosterone drives what Louann calls the "man trance" - a glazed-eye stare at breasts. She says: "I wish I could say that men can stop themselves from entering this trance. But the truth is, they can't."

3 Men want more partners

According to the book, men want an average of 14 sexual partners in their lifetime. Women want one or two.

Louann says: "It's postcoital narcolepsy. During orgasm, males release a huge amount of oxytocin in their brains, and it is very sedating. It's not that he doesn't love you."

4 Men lie more about sex

Biologically speaking, men are more comfortable lying to the opposite sex.

5 Foreplay round the clock

In case of women, foreplay is everything that happens in the 24 hours before intercourse. For men it's what happens three minutes before entry

Louann says: "The male brain's initial emotional reaction can be stronger than the female. But within 2.5 seconds his face changes to hide the emotion, or even reverse it."

Perseverance, not looks or talent, key to excellence

We tend to link brains, beauty, luck and capital with highly successful business people.

However, a new study shows that exceptional performance need not depend on special talent, experience or even sheer luck.

Instead, it is the result of sustained, intense and deliberate practice in a particular area, says Robert A. Baron, professor of management and psychology in the University of Iowa who led the study.

The study authors show that most people work only 'hard enough' to achieve a certain performance level, acceptable to themselves and others, with no further gains.

The path to true excellence can be attained through perseverance, says the study.

Entrepreneurs can acquire new capacities that can assist them in starting or running a new venture or allow them to adapt to unforeseen circumstances, says a statement from the University of Iowa.

These factors help secure a positive outcome: preparation, repetition, self-observation, self-reflection, and continuous feedback on results. And these efforts lead to a healthy self-efficacy.

The study was published in the March issue of Strategic Entrepreneurship Journal.

SOLAR POWERED DESALINATION PLANT

SOLAR POWERED DESALINATION PLANT

small desalination plant being developed by researchers at MIT and in Korea could lead to small, portable desalination units that could be powered by solar cells or batteries and could deliver enough fresh water to supply the needs of a family or small village. As an added bonus, the system would also remove many contaminants, viruses and bacteria at the same time.

The new approach, called ion concentration polarization, is described in a paper by Postdoctoral Associate Sung Jae Kim and Associate Professor Jongyoon Han, both in MIT's Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, and colleagues in Korea.

The system works at a microscopic scale, using fabrication methods developed for microfluidics devices — similar to the manufacture of microchips, but using materials such as silicone (synthetic rubber). Each individual device would only process minute amounts of water, but a large number of them — the researchers envision an array with 1,600 units fabricated on an 8-inch-diameter wafer — could produce about 15 liters of water per hour, enough to provide drinking water for several people. The whole unit could be self-contained and driven by gravity — salt water would be poured in at the top, and fresh water and concentrated brine collected from two outlets at the bottom.

Electricity from POO POO

Electricity from POO POO

Bangalore: Manoj Mandelia, a 23-years old student from IIT-Kharagpur, has created a method to produce electricity from sewage water. "I developed a product which uses the concept of microbial fuel cell, a bio-electrochemical system that drives current by mimicking bacterial interactions found in nature," said Mandelia, reports Bharat Ghai from TopNews.in.

NOW READ THE COMMENTS:

we can make factory to make the bactria. We will produce garbage, we are expert in it. then from the garbage we wil make electrcity.

If one poo poo can lite a tourchlight fo 10 minuts. power problem of the earth is solved.

It is time we give him some award. This invention has changed the course of histry. All our power cricis is over for ever. the planet is saved.

If we can make great scientist Dr. Abdul Kalak, president , why not Manoj? It will be great to have president Manoj.

I wonder why the he is not yet in all media? all TV programs? he should be, we all want to know what this great scientist has to say.

The cost per unit cost in producing electricity is 280 rs. aprox electricity bill will be 8500/- per month.

but to save the planet we all should give up our money.

Thanks manoj, for giving oppertunity to sacrifice for the nation.

Another idea copied from West and passed on as "INNOVATION" by IITans...please stop these stunts...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microbial_fuel_c ell

- this idea has been there since 1900's and if you see above link you can see that in 2007 University of Queensland demonstrated this technique.

You can read the interesting article in the April 2004 issue of Environmental Science and Technology (volume 38, number 7, pages 2281-2285).

www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5335635/

And another link from National Geographic

http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2004/ 03/0301_040302_sewagepower.html

In my town some body attempted to utilise sewaage water from Minicipality to run a turbine and get electricity from the discarded small plane generators. Th3e project was not successful. More than technology other social factors such as collection of sewage water and sustained supply of sewage water have to be considered. Novel ideas appear sensational. One can say it is possible to generate enormous amount of electricity from Lightning. Can it be done. I am not discouraging Mr. Manoj. Everyday in the news some innovation from IITians or others appear. If all the innovations were implemented India would have been on top in the world. Mere enthusiasm is not enough but it has to be supported by entrepreneurship.

Approaching a VC? Here is a checklist

Approaching a VC? Here is a checklist
By   Sikta Samantaray
Bangalore: Seeing the growth of Indian software market, Ravi Varma started its own software venture in 2005, but could not go long and had to shut company's door in 2007, as he failed to raise fund from venture capitalists (VCs).

Currently working as a Vice President - Strategy in an IT firm, Varma graduated from IIM, Bangalore in 2004. After running the business for two years without any financial support, Ravi thought that his company had all the right credentials needed by venture capitalists, but when he pitched his ideas to around 10 VCs, he realized that his idea is premature and can not be funded by any venture firm.

Not only Varma, there are several such start-up entrepreneurs, who are in a race to raise VC funding. So, to help these emerging entrepreneurs, SiliconIndia talked to some of the VCs to know the important factors that can help these entrepreneurs to improve their chances of getting funded. Here are some important thoughts being given by VCs:

Do you have a Team to lead?

A company may have a big business idea, but working individually may not help it to achieve the objective. It is the team which may help one's idea to convert into a profitable product or service. Anurakt Jain, Analyst, Draper Fisher Jurvetson India said, "VCs invest in a team, so sell the team. A start-up should know well about their team members before pitching to VCs."

Pitch

The process of raising fund can be one of the more physically and emotionally draining parts of starting a business. It can go on for weeks or months, taking away focus from business. As an entrepreneur seeking funding, one need to demonstrate that he/she is very clear about his/her idea and how he/she would build an economically viable business around it. Rajesh Vakil, Head, Siemens Venture Capital, India said, "Put together a good investor presentation that covers all aspects of the business plan. A weak presentation can put off VCs easily." Speaking on the similar lines, Jain said, "The first 5-10 minutes of pitch to VCs are very crucial - get VCs on the hook. Describe the company in one-two lines - that would be helpful in running the business as well."

What is your USP?

While explaining about the product or service, a company need to avoid using jargon and adjectives. VCs say that startups should explain the product or service in simple language and emphasize its competitive edge or USP. Manav Sethi, COO BigMaps said, "The basic objective of a start-up should be to show that there is a need of this product or service in the market."

Business Plan

For any start-up, the purpose of presenting a business plan should be to show the potential to investors that if they invest in its business. Vakil said that a business plan must have a very effective executive summary, and in that summary a company should highlight the market, the product or service, management team, stage of the startup, location, market, market size, business, business model, capital structure, capital required and exit options. He also asked these startups to critically evaluate the business plan and do a market opportunity analysis to determine scalability of business. "Ask honestly "Will you fund this if it was someone else's business plan," added he.

Customer Base

Before presenting to VCs, a company needs to evaluate the customer business case, benefits and payback. Also, it needs to know in details about its existing customers as well as its potential customers. Any company can?t have any better evidence than customers to prove its claims about the marketability of its product/service.

A company needs to understand that it is in the market to sell a product, its business idea, which can't be sold unless its customers are satisfied with the product, which they plan to buy. Raghu Batta, Partner, Ojas Ventures said that startups should always make something or sell a service that people want.

What is the plan for interceptor drains at Delhi

What is the plan for interceptor drains at Delhi. It is basically ,

1. laying of parallel drains along three main drains --Najafgarh, Shahdara and supplementary drain
2. the interceptor drains will intercept the outflow of all small drains before they meet these main three drains.
3. the interceptor drains will carry the sewage to STPs
4.From the STPs, treated waste water will be released to these three main drains --Najafgarh, Shahdara and supplementary drain
5. From these main drains, the treated waste water will go to the river Yamuna as it is flowing today.

70% of the small drains will be intercepted and 85% of the total generated sewage of Delhi will be treated in this way.

I helped one of my associates in chennai in an internatioal tender last year . I feel that the method of  treating waste water before it reaches yamuna should be like this. If you notice in the tender, there is just one interception at the end of the main drain before it meets the river.

In our case, the treated sewage from the STPs will be released to the main drains again where it will get mixed with untreated sewage from small drains that are not intercepted ( 30%) .This is the major flaw of the present scheme.

I was searching for this Manila tender for a long time to give it to you. This morning at 6 o clock, while searching through my old files I came across this file suddenly. Lets hope it will help you. I believe in Destiny. Everything is destined to be get done at an appropriate FIXED time.

There is a flaw in the manila tender also. In a highly centralised system, we cant recycle the whole load as it will require another network of pipes to carry the treated waste water back into the city.Do you think its feasible in Delhi?

I know from our very first meeting whats going on in your mind. You are interested in treatment of waste water at the source itself before it reaches even the interceptor drains. What you are thinking of is a network of decentralised very very small STPs all around Delhi managed by local communities. And its easy to recycle some parts of treated waste water from these small STPs at the community level .

Are there any new thoughts ? As you travel a lot outside India, maybe you are having more ideas.

Homeopathic remedy-Frozen shoulder with wasting of the deltoid muscle

Frozen shoulder with wasting of the deltoid muscle (Adhesive capsulitis, Periarthritis)

My Mother is suffering from it.

It is also known as 50 shoulder in alternative medicine in Asia because its victims are usually people around the age of 50. It affects more women than man .

Frozen shoulder syndrome is considered to be the end-point for other shoulder problems – yet it is an enigma! It seems to occur mainly in women as they enter the menopause prompting some authorities to suggest a 'hormonal' component.

Frozen shoulder is characterized by pain and loss of motion or stiffness in the shoulder. The recovery is very slow.

• Exact cause is unknown.

Frozen shoulder, medically referred to as adhesive capsulitis, is a disorder in which the shoulder capsule, the connective tissue surrounding the gleno-humeral joint of the shoulder, becomes inflamed and stiff, and grows together with abnormal bands of tissue, called adhesions, greatly restricting motion and causing chronic pain.

Movement of the shoulder is severely restricted. Pain is usually constant, worse at night, when the weather is colder. This condition can last from five months to three years or more and is thought in some cases to be caused by injury or trauma to the area. It is believed that it may have an autoimmune component, with the body attacking healthy tissue in the shoulder. The condition may also cause chronic inflammation. Adhesions grow between the joints and tissue, greatly restricting motion and causing a number of painful complications. There is also a lack of fluid in the joint, further restricting movement.

GENERAL MANAGEMENT of Frozen Shoulder

• Rest to joint during acute stage.

• Provide sling.

• Mild passive shoulder exercises.

Exercise is a very important part of the treatment. Exercises will help break up the scar tissue in the shoulder and should be done twice a day. The doctor or physical therapist will show the patient what kind of exercises should be performed. Since the exercises may be painful, using ice packs afterwards may help. With all exercises, the patient should warm up before attempting to do them.

Frozen shoulder treatment mostly involves physiotherapy. Some dietary supplements and pain management methods are also helpful in dealing with a frozen shoulder. Do some mild physiotherapy exercises every day so that the shoulder muscles do not become stiffer. Initially, the physiotherapy exercises may seem to increase the pain, but you should continue to exercise so that the range of shoulder movements does not get restricted. For suitable physiotherapy exercises to treat frozen shoulder you can get in touch with a physiotherapist. Besides physiotherapy you should also get a massage to relieve the pain. You can use warm body oil to get a message. However, it is best if someone can give you the massage rather than you doing the massage yourself. An aromatherapy massage will be better as it has therapeutic effects as well. You can also manage the pain by using heat and cold therapy on the shoulder. Take a heating pad and press it upon the shoulder muscles to warm up and relax the muscles. Thereafter, take an ice pack and press it upon the shoulder. Alternate heat and cold treatment can significantly relieve the pain in your shoulder. Another good method would be to use a water pillow to support your shoulder while sleeping. If the pain becomes unbearable and does not let you sleep at night, you may also take some NSAID medications, which are also commonly known as over the counter painkillers. If the frozen shoulder is not showing any sign of improvement you may need to undergo special medical treatment like surgery, electric stimulation, or corticosteroid injections. You will need to consult your doctor before undergoing these treatments.

Successful treatment of adhesive capsulitis include:

Anti-inflammatory drugs

Cortisone injections to the shoulder

Physical therapy

Anti-inflammatory drugs and cortisone injections reduce the inflammation of the shoulder allowing the shoulder to be more easily stretched. Physical therapy is essential because it helps regain the range of motion in the shoulder.

Treatment can be a long process. Initial treatment is aimed at reducing inflammation and pain and increasing the range of motion of the shoulder.

Homeopathic Treatment for Frozen Shoulder

Homeopathy treats the person as a whole. It means that homeopathic treatment focuses on the patient as a person, as well as his pathological condition. The homeopathic medicines are selected after a full individualizing examination and case-analysis, which includes the medical history of the patient, physical and mental constitution etc. A miasmatic tendency (predisposition/susceptibility) is also often taken into account for the treatment of chronic conditions. The medicines given below indicate the therapeutic affinity but this is not a complete and definite guide to the treatment of this condition. The symptoms listed against each medicine may not be directly related to this disease because in homeopathy general symptoms and constitutional indications are also taken into account for selecting a remedy. To study any of the following remedies in more detail, please visit our Materia Medica section. None of these medicines should be taken without professional advice.

Homeopathic Remedies : Case Studies

Two tested remedies Rhus Tox 30C and the Causticum 30C

Doctor: For frozen shoulder , the left shoulder and left hand affected , start with Causticum-30 thrice a day for a week

Patient: Taken Causticum-30 for frozen shoulder as advised by you for one week , he is also taking PHYSIOTHERAPY. Now he is feeling 10%-15% improvement in his pain and the range of hand and shoulder movements has also increased 10% - 15%. Please advice further medication.

Doctor: Please continue physothreropy and this week take Rhustox-30 (thrice a day 3 drops per dose )and stop causticum30C. and report after a week the changes.

Patient : No further improvement in pain and stiffness even after continuing the Rhustox-30 for two weeks. My father's total improvement is still around 40%.

now

Dr.Mahfooz: Please give him Rhust-200 once a day after every 4 days and he will be insha Allah alright. Report after two weeks. Continue physiotherapy.

Frozen Shoulder - pain relief

Frozen Shoulder - pain relief

disclaimer - I have no specialised medical knowledge

frozen shoulder - a simple pain-free solution

Stand a couple of feet away from the corner of a table, facing the table with legs slightly more than shoulder width apart. Put the hand of your 'good arm' on the corner of the table and lean forward so it supports your body weight, and so that the hand of your 'bad' arm (the one with the frozen shoulder) is hanging down. Let your bad arm just hang there. Do NOT swing your bad arm. GENTLY rotate your hips and upper body in a circular motion, similar to hula hooping in slow motion. (see Fig 1) You will notice that your hanging arm also rotates very gently in the same direction. Allow your hanging arm to move naturally. After a few rotations (between 10 and 20) pause for a few seconds, then rotate the hips and body in the opposite direction a similar number of times.

That's it!

If the above exercise is very painful, or increases your pain, STOP immediately. It isn't working for you. If the exercise doesn't increase your pain, try repeating it after 15 minutes. If you find it relieves the pain, then the next time your shoulder is painful repeat the exercise. After doing the exercise a few times try doubling the number of rotations to see if this increases the period of relief.

I had frozen shoulder (known medically as Adhesive Capsulitis) and went to various medical specialists without success. One of them gave me exercises which were very painful and if anything seemed to make it worse. I searched the net and found a large number of treatments and therapies suggested, including surgery, drugs, diet, yoga, acupuncture, massage, deep manipulation, trigger therapy, heat treatment, lotions, and a variety of exercises. Many of them claimed that if the suggested remedy was followed exactly the condition would be cured within a couple of years.

I was confused and disappointed. Then I found a page* which stated very bluntly that in the majority of cases frozen shoulder sorts itself out in 18 months to 2 years regardless of the treatment used, and that many of the treatments, including painful exercises, can make the condition worse. It suggested the above method as a way of relieving the pain. I tried it and it worked. Not only did it relieve the pain, but within a month my shoulder was noticeably freer, and within a couple of months it was near enough back to normal.

Searching the web brings up thousands of pages on "frozen shoulder" but this particular pain relief treatment is hard to find, which is a pity because I found it very effective, and it doesn't rely on expensive consultations and treatments.

* The original page is no longer online. There is also an article which gives a more technical account of this exercise in the September 2000 issue of "The Physician and Sportsmedicine" (Vol 28, No 9), but it is only available on subscription.
